recurrence at mastectomy site??
Hi everyone, I am 5 yrs out now but just found two pea size nodules on mastectomy side. Went to onc today, she is sending me for us next week. Has anyone else had a recurrence of ca at mastectomy site after having chemo and rad? I originally had invasive ductal ca, er/pr neg, her2 positive. I am feeling extremely anxious. I feel like even being five years out doesn't let you really relax. I already have an appt with surgeon, because found benign papillomas in left breast and I am opting for a mastectomy on that side also. I am feeling very overwhelmed as I live on a lake and our house is like a hotel in the summer. I am trying to limit guests from just my kids and their families but still there is work to be done!

Local Recurrence
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0049047/
Hi Carria,
I'm afraid you will have to copy and paste the above web site as I don't know how to make it so you can just click on it.
You have what is known as a local recurrence which would still be considered the same stage you began this journey on. That is good news if there is ever any good news with a recurrence. The web site should explain it better than I can.
Perhaps you can have your kids help you out when they visit instead of being just guests.
Hope this helps you and I wish you well,
Best,
Doris

My sister had a local
My sister had a local recurrence at mastectomy site. She did chemo, no radiation, but elected not to do femara (she was ER+). After recurrence, she did a surgical clean up, radiation and has been on femara for about 10 years. No further problems.

I had that happen also
Hi!
I had breast cancer (1999) and a recurrence a year and a half after chemo. It was the size of a BB just under my skin. So in 2001 I had a lumpectomy, hysterectomy and radiation. I didn't take any hormone blockers back then because I was having alot of issues with meds and didn't know at the time that my thyroid got killed so I just didn't feel good and I had two sons to keep up with. A famous Dr in Indy told me "to get my things in order" but I have been in remission until this year I found out I have Mets in my lung. It was the size of a Pea. The Drs kept treating me for Asthma but I just knew it was much more and asked for a CT Scan. Sooo I found a great Onc here in town and I took Xeloda from April until today. It didn't kill the cancer but it didn't grow or spread so now the Dr has me on Arimidex. Started it today. Hope it works. BTW...I'm sure people would understand if you took the summer off from alot of company. Enjoy the lake! It's great therapy!!!

Hi Melissa,
I started off in 2000 with 2 rib lesions and went on Arimidex. I was NED in no time which lasted 8 years. Then in 2008, it returned with widespread both lungs, pleura with a pleura effusion. I continued through the hormonal drug therapies until February, having used all but Aromasin, I went on chemo (Taxol) my first since the one I had at diagnose in 1994-1995. It will be 19 years for me this summer.
I hope Arimidex works for you and buys you years of time.
Best,
Doris
