What A Grandmother Is!!

Hello My Friends,

First, I wanted to let you all know that the results of JBG's scan were good. I spoke with her today & she said it shows shrinkage in the lung mets. She's having a great deal of trouble with her feet(redness & swelling) relative to "Hand & Foot Syndrome" caused by the Xeloda so her dosage has been reduced a bit. Other than that , she is doing well.

I am still very busy going through every nook & cranny, cleaning out my house in case downsizing becomes necessary. Keeping busy leaves less time to think, although some evenings I still halfway expect to see Ron on the couch watching Westerns. I am running across so many things thinking "Where the heck did that come from?". Which leads to the subject of my post title. It is completely OT, but since many of us are in this age bracket, I thought I would post it to add a smile to your day. The paper is yellowed & the typing is faint, but the meaning is clear.

What A Grandmother Is!!(written by a third grader)

A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own. She likes other people's little girls. A grandfather is a man grandmother. He goes for walks with the boys and they talk about fishing and tractors and things like that.

Grandmas don't have to do anything except be there. They're old so they shouldn't play hard or run. It is enough if they drive us to the market where the "pretend horse" is and have lots of dimes ready. Or if they take us for walks, they should slow down past things like pretty leaves or caterpillars. They should never say "hurry up". Usually they are fat, but not too fat to tie your shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take their teeth and gums off. It is better if they don't typewrite or play cards except with us. They don't have to be smart, only answer questions like "Why dogs hate cats and how come God isn't married?. They don't talk baby talk like visitors do, because it is hard to understand. When they read to us, they don't skip or mind if it is the same story, again.

Everybody should try to have one, especially if you don't have television because Grandmas are the only grownups who have got time.

Grandmas are awesome! I miss my mother in law. She was difficult at times but there was never a question of how much she loved my kids. I was pregnant with the baby the summer before she died. Everyone reacted with surprise after hearing I was pregnant...since we were over 40! She just clapped and was overjoyed. Sadly she never got to meet him. She had a heart attack the day before he was born and never left the hospital. She did tell her sister we rolled him in the bassinet to see her and how beautiful he was... we did not but I was glad that she felt like she met him.

I sounds like you are hanging in there wolfen. I hesitate to say this because I know you aren't given a choice...but you are one strong lady!

So glad that your daughter is responding favorably - she really deserves it:)

One thing I'd mention on the Xeloda....if things get too intolerable, she can see if her onc could adjust her schedule from a 14/7 plan down to a 7/7 plan.....this will really help on the toxicity she's experiencing. 

Cyn has already mentioned Bag Balm....I used it way too late, because nobody ever told me about it (way before board)....but even after the fact, it helped restore some moisture and helped me get my shoes on.....standing and walking still hurt really bad, but as I said it was way after the cattle had left the barn.

You know I learned how to toss an entire household to the curb - with extreme predudice, I might add.  Now, don't make me gas the car up and come out there - cuz if I do, I'm going through that stuff like $hit through a goose!

I'm glad to still see your sense of self, along with your sense of humor.  It's not easy being a Texan, is it?

Great news about JBG's scan results. Nice to hear some good news. So many people seem to be really struggling right now.

Your Grandmother story gave me a much needed chuckle. Sounds like you are doing a good job in moving forward. Hopefully downsizing won't be necessary. But if it is, I am sure you will adjust to whatever changes are necessary with grace and ease.

So very glad to hear the good news for JBG...she has worked hard for it.

I know you must be working hard too with the huose and all.  Not easy to go thru a life time of stuff. 

Being a grandma has its moments...some very unexpected!  Because I have the time and a little crafting experience I get called on for all kinds of things...from making corsages for high school dances, to making dog toys for a favorite pet, to being the "doctor" to stitch up favorite stuffed toys which have come undone.  I am just glad to still be around to "help out" as I can.

I love the grandmother story.  I am a grandmother and can relate.  I didn't have my grandmothers around when I grew up so I'm enjoying every moment with our grandsons.  They are are one of the reasons my husband is committed to his treatment.

so cute.thanks for that little story and giving everyone an update.all i can say is the Lord is with me everyday.thanks for all the replies on the hand and foot thing.this isnt what i expected.a while back i had skin peeling on my fingers so i used lotion on my hands and feet constantly.well i have been on a higher dose of xeloda plus the avastin for 2 months now.i quit having the peeling skin on my fingers a long time ago.i noticed my feet were hurting alot more than normal so 3 days before my onc appt i noticed the balls of my feet were red,swollen and on fire.yep that is a symptom of hand and foot syndrome.my nurse said lotion would not take care of it so i am supposed to put ice packs on my feet(not to great when you have neuropathy)so they lowerd my dose by 400 mg per day and i hope it makes a differance i will now be on 1600 mg per day 7 days on 7days off.hope everyone is doing ok....Godbless...johnnybegood
