An Alabama mom is accused of lying about her son having cancer in order to raise money.
PENNSAUKEN — A South Jersey woman tricked friends and supporters into believing her 9-year-old son had cancer, stealing at least $3,500 along the way, authorities told Philly.com.
Susan Stillwaggon, a 35-year-old married mother of four from Pennsauken, stole at least $3,500 raised through fundraisers held for her son, the report said. She also led her son to believe that he had cancer, CBS-3 reported.
She was charged Thursday with theft by deception, forgery, endangering the welfare of a child and using a child to commit a crime.
Pennsauken police received a tip from another department and from the child's school that Stillwaggon may have invented her son's illness, Philly.com reported.
Stillwaggon is now in a psychiatric ward, someone who identified herself as Stillwaggon's mother told CBS-3.
Stillwaggon allegedly used Facebook to spread the word that her son had cancer. Her husband is not believed to have known about his wife's scheme.
