in Colorectal Cancer #1

I finally had my first consult at The University of Md yesterday.  The appointment went well...they took 6 or 7 vials of blood to run tests.  The dr is going to check CEA and other markers as well as start the process of genetic testing.  We discussed my treatment so far and the pain that I have been having Since February.  He thinks it is probably my ovaries...they probably need to come out.  We are not sure if the cancer has gone there...but with the signet cell...that is one of the most likely areas of progression.  He scheduled me for a pt/ct scan on Monday morning.  Finally, I had been asking my local oncologist for a PET scan since the beginning.  The local oncologist was willing to revisit the idea of a PT scan in June IF I continued to have pain.  I don't know about you guys but 4 months of unexplained pain is not what I was hoping to hear.

so anyway the plan in a nutshell...

pt/ct scan on Monday

Pathology and all scans being re-reviewed by experts...primary is uncertain may be appendix may be colon

checking all bloodwork - including various cancer markers

case to be presented to the tumor board at the end of the month

depending on what the tests show ...we will schedule surgery on ovaries which will also probably include a laproscopic look see for mucus in the peritoneal cavity.  If the mucous is found then we will discuss HIPEC.

    I'm glad that they are finally ready to address your pain issues...you've been hurtin' for awhile....I hope you get some relief and a few answers too:)

    Might as well get a "2 for 1" while you're there:)

    I hope all goes well for you, Alex...you deserve some good things right about now.

    Appendix cancer is commonly

    Appendix cancer is commonly found as a tumor on the ovary - that's how mine was found, during a routine hysterectomy.  The ovary is a convenient place for "spilled cells" to grab onto and grow.  My appendix ruptured sometime in the past; we don't know when, but we do know it looked healthy during my hysterectomy.  The only reason it was removed then was because the frozen section pathology of my ovarian tumor showed to be of appendiceal origin, so my healthy-looking (tumor-filled) appendix was removed.

    If there is a possibility of appendix cancer, be sure you are seen by an appendix cancer expert; not someone who will treat it as "just a variant of colon cancer."

    Thank you everyone.  I am just trying to stay busy...so I don't think too much.  I am visiting a friemd tomorrow for coffee...I just hope that she doesn't want to talk to much about dothe cancer.

    Sounds like a plan....

    I know I do better when there is a plan....sorry about your pain and hopefully they will get that under control. Try and have a good weekend and and enjoy those adorable kids. ~ Ann
