High Blood Levels Post-spleenectomy

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone else has had continued high platelets and or white cell counts after having their spleen removed?

My older sister had her spleen removed as part of her treatment for LyoMeo (sp?) sarcoma. I will see her tomorrow and ask. I will share her answer with you.

    Hi Cole74,

I still have my spleen but some of my asplenic friends wear a medical alert bracelet with this info.  They also carry asplenic guidelines in their wallert and instruct family members to relay this info to medical professionals if need be.   If you need the guidelines, I can provide them for you. Sorry if you are all ready aware of this.

Also, sorry I can't answer your question directly.  I answered another post of yours and directed you to the ACOR.ORG website.  I know of many LT- Survivors that do not have their spleen.  They will be of some help for you.

    All the best,

    Cathy

    Hi Cathy

Thanks for your reply.  I don't think I am aware of the guidlines. I have thought of a medical alert a few times. I guess I should really get one. I did join the LT-Survivors group so I Have been posting here and there. I was in the walk in clinc this weekend because I found a total now of three new lumps on my chest, one near collar bone, and one under my breast. The Dr. made an urgent referal back to the Cancer Center so hopefully I will see someone this week. I appreciate the support of everyone. And glad to have you all there.

    Hi Nicole,

I thought your current situation sounded familiar, now I recognize you from your recent posts on ACOR.  Have you tried searching the archives at that site?  You can search for asplenic guidelines and a find them from Dr O, my LT Follow up Specialist at MSKCC.  If you can't find them, I'll provide a link for you.

Good Luck at the cancer center, it's tough waiting for appts and answers, isn't it?  Keep us updated if you can and care to.
