My girlfriend has just been diagnosed

in Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin) #1

Hello,

Sadly my girlfriend has been told she has Lymphoma. She had a large Lymph node swell in her groin. It was removed and we have been told it's cancer. The node has been sent for more tests (at the moment they think it is either HL or T-Cell NHL). She has also had bone marrow and CT tests. We get the full results in 2 days. We are both really worried especialy about the effects of treatment on her fertility. I'm finding the wating is almost unbearable.

    Sorry to hear about your girlfriend's diagnosis. It is good she has you so be supportive. Many of us have/had no one.

    My lymphoma was found on a fluke CT scan and I was very very surprised. I went through a liver needle biopsy and bone marrow tests plus others. I understand it is hard waiting for results.  You imagine all kinds of stuff. She will probably get a PET test done which is similar to a CT scan except it "lights up" those areas that have lymphoma. Just remember that everyone is different in their symptoms and treatment.

    Do not be afraid to ask the doctor or oncologist questions. The information may scare her/you but it is needed to make an informed decision. As to fertility, there are women on the board who have had children after treatment and ones would could not. It all depends. I know, I hate that word myself "depends" and "everyone is different".  You want/need solid answers.  I wish I could give you more information as the imagination is not a good thing to go by.     Sorry that you are waiting

    Sorry that you are waiting for the results now, this is a difficult time. 

    As far as fertility, I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1989, just maried.  At that time they wanted to treat with radiation only to spare my fertility.  The chemo of choice then, MOPP, effected ferility.  So in 1993 I had my first daughter.  Unfortunately, I had a recurrence while pregnant with her.  Luckily, the chemo regimine changed and ABVD was recommended.  Then in 1996, I had my second daughter at the age of 36, after chemo. 

    If I could suggest, keep a notebook with all your questions.  As they are answered, you may become relieved and find some worry was unecessary.  Best of luck to you and your girlfriend.

    Well we have had very good news! The final results show that it is an inflamatory disease called Kikuchi which looks very much like Lymphoma under the microscope!!! No further treatment is needed! I wish you all a very happy and long life! All the best.
