Neupogen self-shots

Hey guys,

 

I was just released from the hosptal from R-ICE #4 and I'm in the mobilization stage. Luckily, my doc has agreed to let me give myself the Neupogen shots at home each day.

 

I've never really done this before, and I practiced on a little flap of skin all day before they released me. (Also-- the lovely nurse actually let me give her a saline shot in her arm!) I feel I've got it down, but wondering if anyone else out there has any tips or tricks they wished they knew before doing it. I guess I'm going to have to 3,2,1 go for it! Heck-- I already said I would do it!

 

ALso, anyone have racing pulse after R-ICE? I have to remain very paced.

 

Any help, luv, wishes are welcome. Just trying to get through this

Hi Nathan!  Well, at least you don't have to make a special trips to get those shots .  Just think of it as "sticking it to cancer" and maybe that will make it easier.   My most recent experience wtih giving shots was giving a friend's diabetic cat insulin shots while my friend was out of town.  It didn't hurt a bit .

Hi Nathan, I thought they

Hi Nathan, I thought they check your levels each time they give the shots to see where you are at before the stem cell collection... My wonderful Dad and I went in to get the shots... You mayexperience bone pain as the marrow begins producing more in prep for collection... Please take care of yourself and thinking of you as you take this journey...you will do well God willing...Did you have the post RICE ctscan yet?

I will be sending you lots of positive energy and good thoughts! I have only giving myself shots once, when I had some blood clots some years ago. I had to do it every day for a week, it wasn't that bad but it wasn't fun either lol! I hope you don't experience any pain...wishing you lots of luck in this new phase of your treatment.

I did it! Success!

I'm not so sure there will be a post R-ICE scan. My insurance bailed out, so I'm on charity care, and really have to follow whatever they say. I'm glad I am able to have the chance!!

 

They will begin checking my CBCs and stem cell counts later next week.. but for the time being, it's self-inflicted Neupogen.

 

I actually did my first two shots a few hours ago, and it went just fine. You've really just gotta pinch the fat, and go for it-- I really don't think there's any other way to approach it. This is one part of the cancer journey that is easy as pie.

I'm glad you have the chance to get the treatment as it is pretty costly... Good job with the shot... I'm glad it went well. I think 4 RICE treatments is the most they can do so they may not do the scan and just head to sct...wishing you the cleanest scans after sct... Take care and keep us posted please... You may need pain killer or two with the shots as they clutter up your bone marrow... Which is very normal and expected...

Yay!

Congrats on your "self-infliction" .  I knew you could do it!  I certainly wouldn't have any problem finding any fat to pinch these days but I ain't complaining.  Some say claritin helps prevent the bone ache so take that if you can.

Hi Nathan,

I've had to give myself the Nuepogen shots since the beginning of my treatment. I close my eyes when I do it as it makes me squemish, but I get it done. I didn't experience too much achiness from it. I hope you don't. I did get the claritin as that was recommended for the aches it causes. I only used it when they changed me from the nuepogen to a stronger injection, that I only have to do one time after the chemo now.

 

I'm glad your getting continued treatment with the insurance dropping you. I could go on a rant about that and our screwed up healthcare system, but I won't, as inspite of it your getting treatment, and I'm getting treatment, and we'll get better.
