    BMB

Not gonna pull any punches with you about the BMB. They are very unpleasant. It hurt really bad when I had mine 2 1/2 years ago. They did use a numbing agent right at the sight, but it was still very unpleasant with a lot of pressure. I will never have another one unless I am totally numb or knocked out. No use trying to sugar coat it cause you will be cussing me out afterwards. It was done in the office and took about 1 hour. Tell them to totally numb you or knock you out. Again, it is not a pleasant experience. John

    Bill,

Cobra is correct. The marrow is extracted with what looks somewhat like a cork screw through a puncture in the top of your hip bone (this is the most common way and location).  They numbed mine locally and gave me a morphine shot before, but I was awake and did feel some of it. By the next day, mine did not hurt, but I have heard of others who hurt longer.  It is an important test to have done. It is one of the more primitive medical proceedures still out there.

Hang in there man !  You have everyone pulling for your well being.

I have had it three times. Twice it was only on one side but MD Anderson did it on both sides at the same time. Its not pleasant by any stretch, but I did not find it so awful. My sister described it as horrible so I expected the worst. I would compare it to a root canal. Then again I am an oddball when it comes to pain. Things that don't bother other people do bother me.

Basically what they do is extract a tiny core sample. Then through the same hole they draw out some fluid which looks just like blood. Best thing about it is it only takes 5 minutes

Best of luck. You can do this.

    Garry.

    UGH!

    Hi Bill,

If it was me I would ask for something stronger than a numbing agent. I won't have it done again unless they agree to knock me out. Maybe you will do fine, but it's better to know ahead of time that it's very "possible" to experience some serious discomfort. BIG "ouchie" for me! FrownBest wishes...Sue

    Hi Bill

Hi Bill.  I pretty much agree with everyone else.  I've only had one done just before I started treatment on both sides of my hips and one had to be done twice as they didn't get marrow the first time.  I wasn't knocked out but the skin was completely numb.  It really did hurt but the positive was that the pain was extremely brief - just a few seconds.  If I ever have it done again, I'm with Sue (knock me out).  There was a little soreness afterward but very tolerable.  Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

    Hi Bill

    Hi Bill,

I don't have anything nice to say about BMB, sorry! I've had two done, the first one wasn't too bad but the second one was just horrible...very painful. If I ever need another one, I will follow Sue's advice (knock me out please)!!! That way I won't feel anything. I really do hope yours isn't that terrible. Good luck and let us know how everything went for you. Take care

    Sincerely,

    Liz

Thanks All for the input, I did it this morning. started at 10:05 and was done by 10:20. The Nurse and the DR kept talking to me the whole time, 'Asking questions' Talking about movies, kidz, life. I was doing most of the talking of course. It felt like bee sting at first and littile prusser I kept talking through it. and Boom I am done. I went right back to work. took a couple Advel piles at 3:00 PM and I am doing great No problem sitting or walking. He is been doing this for 27 years. And got it right at first time. he explained as an easy not a big deal thing. and that after it's over he said I'll be glad I did not do it as an outpatiant procedure. I prayed a lot this morning before I went DR. And GOD answer my call. "Thank You GOD'

    Great to hear it's done

Great to hear it's done Bill.  For me, 23 years ago, the nurse said after the doc was done "I think we should've given her more numbing agent".  But what I remember the most was they gave me the vial, unwrapped,  and I had to take it across the street to drop it off at Pathology!!

    Good luck!

    Great!

    Hi Bill,

So glad your BMB is all done and you did so well with it! Just goes to prove that we are all unique in our own way and we won't necessarily experience procedures in the same way. Good for you...now it's behind you! Smile

    Best wishes...Sue  (FNHL-2-3a-6/10) age 62

    Godzilla to Dino

Bill, it's okay to be human and be afraid.  i wish I could tell you the fear goes away but it doesn't even after you have finished treatment and are in remission.  Think of this as a series of battles to be played out in a war.  You got through your BMB (bone marrow biopsy) with relative ease - a victory to celebrate!  I was often anxious during treatment - I just wanted it to be over with.  I tried to focus on just getting through each step and had a little "party" in my head after I completed each one. I remember thinking "Two treatments down, 4 more to go...Three treatments down, half way there...etc.".

Laughter and humor along with attitude will help you deal with the fear/anxiety monster.  It can transform "Godzilla" to "Dino" (from the Flintstones) Wink.  I turned 55 shortly after finishing treatment.  I just celebrated 56 last month - another battle won - still counting the victories here and thankful.

    Hugs and positive thoughts,

    Jim

    Thank You

Thank you Bill. I live right outside Fayetteville,NC. I think Charlotte is around 75 miles from me. I haven't been there in a few years so it may be closer now with the way they are building the expressways. I have NHL, follicular, stage 4,grade 1 and was asymtomatic. Keep in mind Lymphoma is not like the other organ type cancers so stage is not a big a factor in treatment. There are so many treatment plans for what we have. Even so,it is still no picnic. John

    Glad it went well

Sounds similar to my ecperiences. Like we all say its different for each of us. My Dr. Did it in his office and it was obvious he knew exactly what to do. I think the key is to do it quickly with no messing around. I am in Virginia if anyone wants his name.

    Age

Actually, most of us here (not an official estimate, but how it appears to me) are a bit older than you, Bill. And, lymphoma is successfully trreated even in the very aged.  What are you staged at ? It sounded to me as if you were very early in the disease from your earlier posts.
