I have a subscription to "The Family Handyman," and they explained what a Field Editor is/does as a do-it-yourselfer.
"Field Editors contribute tips, share their wisdom (and goofs!), answer questions, test products and help us create content for...(the magazine)."

Sounds like kidney cancer patients on this board to me.
