Juicing

OK, So I started the Detox diet. Juice and exclude Meat for two weeks, minimize Meat for 4 additional weeks, and then add Meat Proteins a little at a time over a year. Mostly Raw foods and nearly vegan for a year.

I was given a inexpensive juicer from a neighbor. It was a 300 watt motor. It barely lasted a month. lol I know everyone wants to minimize expenses, me included. I have read numerous times to just bite the bullet and spend $125 or more to get a decent juicer. Else you will be purchasing multiple juicers. I am in the purchasing my second juicer in less then 5 week! lol Frugal does not pay off here! lol

We bought a used Champion juicer on Craigslist for
seventy five dollars. We have used it every day for
over a year...works great. We might have to order a
new cutter for it but all other parts will last for
a long time. A very dependable juicer.
Hope you find something that works.

Unfortunately I have recurrence at the surgical site and 3 mets in the peritoneal cavity. I am having the mets biopsied tomorrow morning to test if they are false positives or cancer. It was a two month high being NED.

My CEA is still at 2.0. Which hopefully means nothing is growing fast.

So very sorry to hear that....are the mets in your peritoneal cavity close to your surgical site?? I had something showing my last scans, the way onco. described it is it in the fat between bowel loops, I suppose it's the same thing....I'm gonna ask at my next appt., I have scans next week, and onc. appt. the following week, if it's in the area where my bowel was resected. My spleen is another issue, I'm on xeloda, hoping it's working. I wish I had been on xeloda instead of a complete chemo. break. Maybe this crap would have been held at bay.

ebay
the latest Champion juicer can be got on ebay for $75-125. Other brands too, but champion is a work horse and easy to clean (comparatively).

The Champions/Omegas are going for the upper limit $125. I bid on a handful and they all seem to go for around $125 (w/shipping) or a little more. I always try to see where the bottom is then i will get aggressive on a few and get one.

We will probably end up with a Breyville also. Both the Champ and Breyille have ther own strengths.

We splurged on an Omega on Amazon shortly after my husband's diagnosis in August. Felt it was something we had a little control over, however now he's not too interested unless it's a fruit juice. Hopefully I'll convince him it's worth it.

About a week after I bought it, I ended up seeing a different juicer (can't remember the brand) at Savers for $25 or so. Savers is like Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc, so if you have any of those places, they may be worth stopping in to check.

Breville vs Champion/Omega
I've looked at both juicers, love Breville products and this looks good. It's great that you don't have to chop everything up - but what about the fact that it creates heat? Do you see that as a problem. I've read that the masticating juicers are better.

My big question...how does the juice taste, specifically the ones with an apple or another fruit plus a lot of greens. I've been afraid to buy one that it will get used once, everyone will hate it and I'm out the price of a juicer.

Robin - I have the omega and
Robin - I have the omega and have done things such as bunch of carrots, stalk of celery, 1 apple and bunch of greens. I liked it. My husband liked them prior to chemo but now can't stand the smell. The kids didn't care for it at all. The kids love the fresh orange juice and apple juice, so really it's been used for that a lot. I'm hoping to start using it more for myself for the veggie juices and also to get my husband interested in them again too. I bought a bunch of different types of apples from our area orchard and everyone loved the juice it made - more of a cider. I ended up making a nice healthy cake for baby's first b-day this past weekend with the pulp from the apples and some pulp from carrots. The only problem with the fruit juices is it gets expensive - 4 + oranges for a glass....when the oranges are about $1 each it's hard to justify the cost of a glass of fresh squeezed juice.

All that said, I'm enjoying it and i'm confident I'll get him drinking the juice again and I don't regret the purchase. I read the same about the juicers that heat up the juice and that's why I ended up spending more on the masticating juice - don't know if it's true or not...just like most over things about cancer and treatment it's hard to know what is true, what is opinion, etc.

The centrifugal juicers have
The centrifugal juicers have the advantage with Carrots, apples, and other course grain fruits or vegetables. They shred all pieces of what goes in and spins the juice out of the pulp. They do not do grasses or leafy vegetables as well. One must wrap tightly leaf and grasses to get decent extraction. The Breville and a couple others are spinning really fast and dissipate the heat through air contact. Then the oxidation issue comes in. (The better Brevilles are spinning over 10,000 rpms.)Centrifugal juicers are loud.

The Crushing or masticating juicers do better with leafs and grasses. They are slower on the carrots and course grain vegetables because they have to be cut small enough to pass through the juicer. Crushing juicers are considerably more quiet! They are also slower at juicing.

I can not tell the difference in taste from either style of juicer. Fresh juice does taste better then bottled! I also add Cilantro or ginger to make "Green" drinks have some taste and spice.

Our omega j8004 does all
Our omega j8004 does all those things...fairly easy to clean but I don't have anything to compare it too. We throw most parts in the dishwasher.

I am really low on money, so I am wondering if any of you have experience with the Nutribullet? There are two bullets, the magic and the nutri...with the nutri being the best/larger....

If you're low on money
why not try to find a used model on Ebay. I use Ebay all the time, have never had trouble. Just make sure you check the feedback before buying. You might find you get something really good for the same price as the Nutribullet.

Thanks everyone for the replies on juicing. I wish there was somewhere to go and try before buying.
