Sepsis

in Colorectal Cancer #1
Has anyone dealt with this ? My mom was admitted to the hospital on Wed after the doctors grey concerned about her blood work. She only had one session of Chemo. She has been feeling great in the hospital, up, around, eating and taking care of herself. The doctor said the bacteria from the bladder infection is in her blood stream. They started her on IV antibiotics now and plan on keeping her until monday. Both my grandparents died of sepsis... however one of them was 100 years old and the other was 98. I googled it again and once again freaked myself out :-(

    Didn't you think your grandparents were ever going to die? Sounds like they both had long full lives. You have to learn how to cool it!!!!!

    Sepsis is deadly if not diagnosed... your Mom is in the right place, getting treated so try not to freak. I know you are having a hard time with all of this, I will say a prayer for you and I hope you are a pray-er yourself.

    No I agree they both had
    No I agree they both had great lives and I knew they were going to die. I was trying to find out if their age was the reason the passed on due to sepsis. They are the only two people I ever knew with the infection When I looked online it seemed like a rather grim stat for people getting sepsis with an underlying medical condition. I was hoping to see if this is something that can be treated.

    I had sepsis at the end of
    I had sepsis at the end of my chemoradiation that also started from a UtI. I was in the hospital for 4 days on IV antibiotic then went on oral when I went home. If caught early, it's easily treatable. Sounds like you mom is up and around so that's a good sign.

    Older people are more likely
    Older people are more likely to become septic simply because they tend to be more frale than younger folks. I developed sepsis from strep throat when I was 30 years old, had multiple organ failure, a stroke, had to have one of my big toes amputated from the infection (my hands and feet turned black like frostbite, nueropathy from nerve/tissue damage). It sounds like they caught your Mom's early... if she is up and moving around that is a great sign! I spent a month in a induced coma, had to learn to walk, talk and live all over again.
    I know you are worried, come here and post when you are feeling scared, that is what this site is for. There are lots of people that are willing to share and console you in this tough time. I know it sounds horrible but the further you get into your mom's diagnoses the more you will be able to take things a day at a time which is the key to all of this craziness.

    Thanks for the responses guys, I was down to see her in the hospital today and she is doing great. I had the chance to talk with the doctor and he said she does not have sepsis. When her blood levels were out of wack they discovered bacteria in her blood. He said they caught it at the stage before sepsis which he said we were very lucky. She is on IV antibiotics for the UTI infection and he said she will be discharged either mondy or tuesday with an oral antibiotic to take at home.
