Start of 3rd week
Any help would be appreciated.
I still drink soda to help cut the mucous and it's one of the only liquids I can swallow. Tried water yesterday and It still chokes me!
I appreciate any tricks you all have!
Thanks,
Billie

Welcome to the group by the way !
Billie,
I think you're doing well ! I haven't gone through all treatments as of yet, others should chime in soon ! I had bad reaction to rads, but chocolate milk was one that helped. Only it caused alot of gunk in my throat at night. Refried beans are my favorite but not during treatment. (burnt) Did alot of soups, and mashed potatoes. Can't help with peg issues...didn't get that far. Best of luck to you Billie ! Katie0 -

Didn't have a PEG but had a G tube and I took adequate calories in it with Ensure and Boost. At first, when able to eat, tapioca and pudding worked well for me but eggs and rice krispies were always consistent winners along with baked potato with butter and sour cream.0 -

I think those are wonderful ideas! Did you do the rice krispies as a cereal, like with milk? Chocolate milk does the same thing to my throat but it's calories :-)
Also, according to my dr a G tube and PEG are the same thing so we are the same!! :-)
I will try the baked potato too, yum! I just bought some tapioca but haven't tried it yet, I'll let you know.
How far out are you?0 -

Sometimes a slightly thicker consistency goes down better than totally thin liquids. Juice nectars, milk shakes, and smoothies fall into this category. There are some great smoothie recipes in the superthread. My husband has one a day and it adds up to 900 calories. Great way to get a lot of calories and protein in when you add protein powder to it!
You're making great progress! Trial and error for a while!0 -

Try and push real food if the nausea allows....puree it and push with a catheter syringe. If you get too sick then stop. I tried the Ensure for a year but it kept me so constipated that I finally went to real food and my strength got better almost overnight. It is great that you are still swallowing...keep it up.
I did not drink "cokes" because my Dr said they were bad for my teeth (carbonation coupled with sugar) and that was a problem I certainly did not want. If you insist then drink sugar free sodas even though they do not have the calories. I now drink club soda to help break up the mucus. Bottom line is do whatever it takes to keep the calories flowing.

Yes to having milk with my rice krispies, in fact, heavy on the milk. Losing track but believe I am now 6+ weeks out and can eat most anything. Crab legs dipped in butter went down especially well last week and the butter felt wonderful on my dry lips! Was able to shop yesterday and working a full day today. Have my energy back! Just two weeks ago I was lying around thinking I'd never turn the corner but it happened. I see the surgeon this week and get my 1st post scan 008/09. Remember some foods may work today but not tomorrow so be creative and keep trying. Pancakes & syrup and corn mixed in mashed potatoes were good too. I've found if I get mashed potatoes in a resturant, I often can't eat them because they are too pastey. The littlest things make a difference. Try, try, try! My husband said he gained what weight I lost because something would sound good and then he would have to eat it because I couldn't.0 -

Thank you all so much for the wonderful ideas! I'm just about ready to try smoothies. Up until now the fruit burnt my throat and tongue but I think I'm ready to try again and the 900 calorie thing sounds like just what I need. The club soda also sounds good. I basically want it to cut the plegm, so nasty! Also real food instead of fiber source sounds good in my tube. I know it's only 3 weeks but I feels so weak! Maybe this will help me too!! I had some tilapia tonight totally drowned in butter and even tho it was such a small amount it seemed to work well.
You guys are great, thanks again so much! Ideas always welcome by the way :-)
