edited July 2012 in Kidney Cancer #1
Hi All,

I first joined this page in Dec 2011 when my mother was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. My mother had her right kidney removed in December 2011. The tumor was pretty large about the size of a football according to her doctor 11cm in one dimension 20cm in the other, it was also protruding against the liver. My Mom has had two Pet Scans and one CT since her surgery. Now, the Pet Scan is showing some activity in the liver. We were bummed to say the least. She has done so well since her surgery, she's been back to work 4 mths and has not complained about anything. She's gained weight after loosing a considerable amount prior to diagnosis.

I spoke with the Dr. who is recommending her see an Oncologist he recommends. Anybody getting treatment in N. Cal? Her doctor mentioned several options including Interlukin saying she would be a good candidate, since she has done so well. Any questions you think I should ask. I now she has clear cell, but we've all been to emotional to get the pathology report.

Also, after the initial surgery, two of my mother's lymph nodes were swollen. One in the neck the other in the groin. The one in the groin was biospyed in Feb. and it came back as a normal cell. The nodes are still swollen and have been since around Jan.

Overall my Mother is doing well, we were praying for other news...I pray for each of you and would appreciate any encouraging words. I also pray for a CURE soon!

    My opinion
I have said this before and i will say it again i still believe the best shot of being cured of RCC at an advanced stage at this time is HD IL-2 or interlukin the downside of this treatment is it is most effective for clear cell RCC and there is a screening process that might eliminate certain subtypes of RCC to be approved to recieve this treatment, but if your mother were to be accepted to recieve IL2 and this is just my opinion i would say go for it,also keep in mind their are are alot of SES associated with this treament and it is only administered in only qaulified medicle facilities in the ICU and it would be very important to have a family member who would be well prepared to support your mothers side effects ,good luck and please keep us posted

As for myself i have decided to take the surgical route for as long as i can,so as far as your mothers liver tumors if they even excist there are techniqes called ablation that can be used to possibally eliminate them

Just to let you know part of the criteria to qaulify for interlukin is a brain scan to make sure there are no mets to the brain if there is a met to the brain then treatment would be postponed until such met were dealt with

    Amonet,

Definately see the Oncologist and get a copy of the pathology report. The pathology report will help you ask the right questions. While the nephrectomy may be a total cure with snall tumors a large tumor sometimes requires aggressive treatment even after the surgery. Many members of our club have done well with these aggressive treatments, We are behind you with our thoughts and prayers for a full recovery.

    Clinical trials
I 'll strongly support finding a clinical trial. Just be informed as to which one is available.
