Mom's birthday party

I had a great day yesterday. It was just what I needed. I woke up and did not really feel like starting the day because I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. I tend to get a little ambitious with the menu when I have a party. I kissed my mom and wished her a happy birthday, then headed to the kitchen to began preparing the food.

I assigned a couple of tasks to my mom who likes to help and especially right now when she is worried about me. I worked for awhile and then took a break, sat on the patio and had a couple of cups of coffee. During the break I filled my water fountain and brought out the patio furniture cushions, I went back in and continued preparations.

My cousin was coming to help but I actually got most of it done before she arrived. We finished up as my two aunts (one is 86, the other 95) arrived. Then I asked, "Who wants a wine cooler?" My aunts, my cousin and I toasted each other. Yes, my aunts had a wine cooler. I put on lively music and the rest of the guests arrived.

My mom had a great time, she loves being the center of attention. It felt good to be surrounded by family and friends. I was in such a good mood, almost giddy (second wine cooler?) and realized I am going to handle whatever comes my way. I think I came to terms with a possible recurrence in April when my count first went up. I was upset for two days while I processed the news. I did not react that way when I got the news on Friday that it had doubled but I thought I would eventually have a meltdown.

I am remaining hopeful but realistic and have informed people I am ready to work on my bucket list again. Not in a morbid way but I want to have some fun whatever the outcome of my test.

I feel that all we have is today and we must get the most out of each moment. I learned this early on in my battle but it has been reinforced by these latest developments. It is ironically a gift one receives with this disease. Appreciation for what we have.

After everyone left I went to my bedroom to relax and my mom came in. She said I want to thank you. I want to thank you for everything you did today. It was a lot of work.

I'm so glad that you had a good day and your mom had a happy birthday celebration. Thank you also for sharing your reflections and thoughts. I'm glad you are remaining hopeful (and realistic too). You have very good reason to be hopeful. I agree with you that all we have is today. I don't want to focus too much on worrying and wondering about tomorrow and find that I missed out on living today. So I try to tell myself (a lot) to enjoy each day and, as you said, appreciated what we have! For me as a cancer survivor, I feel lucky to have each day.

That moment with your mom seriously made me cry. Thank you for sharing your wonderful day. I am going to see my 81 year old mom tomorrow. She is a big time pray-er and I will ask her to include you and all the other strong ladies on this site in her prayers. pn

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY YOU HAD!
I'm so inspired by the way you enjoyed 'the moment' and didn't stress over what was or what wasn't. How wonderful to be able to share your mother's birthday with her and your family.
