in Kidney Cancer #1
I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who have shared your experiences here. It has made the last few months much better for me.

I had a robotic partial a little over a week ago and am battling the boredom and the wait for the pathology report now. I will be going in next week for the report and get the staples removed.

Doc said my surgery was pretty rough. I was in there twice as long as expected.

My biggest problem now is finding a position to sleep in. Any suggestions?

Also all this hobbling around is causing some other body parts to flare up. Now that Ibuprofin and Aleve are out, what can I take for those joint pains?

I am really starting to miss the motorcycle. How long after can I expect to ride?

    Kidney Removal
    I had my kidney removed in Feb 2010 the old fashioned way. I found the best way to sleep was in a recliner.I had a real hard time lying down in the bed.

    T was given Tramadol HCL 50 MG for my back problems. You could check with the nurse or Doctor about taking it.

    I had my partial nephrectomy
    I had my partial nephrectomy the old fashion way and also had to find ways to sleep later. My surgery was on my left side so my wife bought a large pillow that is about 3 feet long which we put in the middle of the bed. I would lay on my right side propped up against the pillow. That was the only way I could get a decent night's sleep.

    Pillow it is
    I agree as I had to do the same thing except mine was on the right. I would lay on my left side with a big pillow propping me up from behind.

    Tylenol and Tramadol are the safest for pain, but during early recovery I took percocet without any issues. Short trips on the motorcycle should be possible starting around 4 weeks and you should be able to gradually increase saddle time from there. Walking and drinking plenty of water right now will do the most for speeding up your recovery and getting you back on the road.

    I had a partial on my left
    I had a partial on my left side on May 10 and im still recovering. Im still sore and some pains here and there. I too am bored and get depressed because i love to be outdoors. I have a horse, hogs, dogs, and a very large garden,if it wasnt for my inlaws living next to me it would be lost. About all i can do at this point is water the garden and that is half one day and the other the next. But each day gets better and better it just takes time. Just take it easy and rest i have made myself sore at times from trying to do things i should not so be very careful. I still have trouble sleeping but i dont have to use a pillow anymore and can lay flat on the bed just have to be careful turnning over from side to side. Good luck and God bless!

    Thanks guys,

    Tomorrow is my next milestone. Getting the staples out and pathology report. Don't think I am ready for a full day of work yet, still get pretty tired in the afternoon. Have to see what the doc says.

    Good luck on the path report today, I expect to hear good news. Then its just those pesky follow-up scans, etc. for a few years, but that's pretty easy to "LIVE" with.

    Report came back as expected, Stage 1, 4cm, confined to kidney. Grade is between 2 and 3, not sure exactly what that means yet, but saw some other threads on the topic so will check it out.

    Back to work tomorrow and doc expects to release me for full activity in 3 weeks (which will be 5 from the date of surgery - robotic lap partial.)

    He reminded me that motorcycles are never a good idea, but I told him I exchange physical risk for mental bliss. He thought that was a good way to explain it. :)

    So we are considering this to be good news and spirits are high.

    Your initial report sounds identical to mine. For the next 10 years you can help me with the newbies now that your initiation is over. Your odds for a full and complete recovery should be close to 100%.

    I like the way you put that! It was a trip to the ER following a motorcycle crash that led to my dx and life saving surgery so in my case motorcycles are a very good idea.

    Stage and clean margins are more important than grade, but the higher grade with such a small tumor is curious. If you don't mind my asking, what type of cancer, clear cell etc., did the path report specify?

    I forgot to get a copy of
    I forgot to get a copy of the report and missed the type. Either he didn't say, or I didn't catch it. That is on my list of things for the next visit.

    Report says:
    Clear Cell
    4.0 x 3.0 x 3.0
    Grade 2-3/4
    Margins Free
    Does not involve the perirenal fat

    The comment was: "Although most of the tumor demonstrates ... nuclear grade 2, focal areas of the tumor contain cells with features of Fuhrman nuclear grade 3."

    Doc says 95% likely that I am in the clear for good at this point.

    I'm glad the path report was positive and the margins free. Of course, one important job of people on this board is reminders to each other for ongoing scans and checkups. Kidney cancer is called the sneaky disease for good reason. So enjoy your current status but don't ever get over confident.

    By the way, I'm curious about the grade posted, grade 2-3/4. I'm certainly no expert in kidney cancer but I've never seen grade expressed like that. Has anyone else seen it. Is it a fraction?

    D109, you'll be OK because bikers watch out for each other here..... I expect to catch crap from people about riding and the risk, but my hospital runs an ad for it's cancer center where people are sky diving! Now that's nuts!

    Doc said it was between 2 and 3. The 2-3/4 is as written on the report. As fox said I believe it means 2 or 3 on a 4 scale. The comment section on the report are the only other explanation I got.


    Started riding on Monday, good to be back on it. Short rides so far, will be building up slowly to longer rides.

    D109, When I was strong enough to go for my first post op ride s/p radical nephrectomy, my wife told me I had a sh*t eating grin on my face. It was a very liberating experience.

    I can see that cycle caution doesn't ride on this board. So I withdraw my caution flags. Maybe I'll instead go shopping for leather and Harleys.
