post rad plaque removal method

I have seen a post a while back in regards to removing plaque from teeth by manual scaling instead of using a cavitron machine. I told my dentist about this and he didnt have much opionion on whether it's required or not for head and neck post radiation patient and he doesnt mind doing it manually. Would it be as effective as cleaning it with the cavitron machine? What does your dentist recommend?
