My sister was just diagnosed with early stage medullary thyroid carcinoma. We would like to know if it is sporadic or familial. Do we have to submit this request to her physician?

One thing you can ask for is

One thing you can ask for is a genetic test to see if it runs in the family. If you are with her doctors I would ask them point blank about what ever is on your mind. I do that with my daughter's doctors. In fact I have two binders full of her medical records just from Sept '12 to now. You should see docs eyes pop out when i plop that down on their desks! :D Seriously, I wish you and your sister lots of luck. check around, there are options to treatment besides surgery. Inform yourself. Going in with all the info you can with give you a leg up on this monster.
