Partial Nephrectomy with complications

in Kidney Cancer #1
On January 5 I went into the operating room for a partial nephrectomy to remove a 3cm tumor from my right kidney. During the surgery I hemoraged and ended up having an open surgery with removal of my entire kidney. I was in the hospital for 7 days. Needed 6 pints of blood and 32 staples to close. I went through a lot but I thank God everyday for the doctors who found my tumor early. It was truly a divine intervention. I am 58 yrs young and in excellent health and keep in shape. I take good care of myself and could not be believe that this was happening me.

    A Partial
    Jackie,

    In my day they were not doing partials. I had a laproscopic neprherectomy on August 1, 2002 just after turning 59 with a 4.2 cm little bugger on my tumor. In talking with my doctors the purpose of a Partial is to save more Kidney function. It is a more difficult operation and the recovery is a little longer. Unfortunately there are a few on this board who have had problems with partials. Hopefully the worst is over for you and 1n 10 years you can take my place on this board as the young 68 year old, 10 year survivor.

    Thank you icemantoo for being so upbeat and postive. I am new at this cancer stuff and although I try to be postive, I feel like I have this dark cloud hanging over my head. Tomorrow I will be a 1 month survivor and maybe as time goes by I will be able to relax and let some of this anxiety go. I guess I am still trying to absorb all this.

    Looks like we have another biker in the club, welcome aboard and sorry to meet you this way. I was 58 when I lost my left kidney to this disease (found in the ER following a bike accident) that was over two years ago now and I'm looking forward to growing old with the iceman. Soon this will all be nothing more than a little speed bump.

    Thought I submitted a response but I guess the Dr.s removed it along with that little tumor bugger. With time, it is easier to adjust to this life changing event. Get better, keep up a positive attitude, and ride your Harley because loud pipes save lives!
