in Colorectal Cancer #1
Hi my husband was diagnosed November 2010 with bowel cancer stage 4 he has received excellent care and after a successful bowel and liver resection with 1st line treatment given as a " mopping up " six months later we've been told his cea level has risen from 35, to 77, to 122 so a ct scan was ordered and confirmed the cancer was present in the peritieum but on a microscopic level which is why it had not been detected sooner
We have been told he can not be cured only treated palliative I can not begin to tel how you feel your world stops for that moment .... Wow we started 2nd line treatment straight away and seems to be tolerating it well although is very frightened of the future he is only 46 and we have two daughters 15, and 18. I've seen on the Internet a dr Jason foster talking about hot chemo or HIPEC sounds amazing just wondered if anyone in the uk knows any more we are due to see our oncologist tomorrow and will ask about cost etc
Anyone with advice would be great

    I think you should research
    I think you should research the possibility of a HIPEC procedure for your husband. Not all surgeons advocate for this surgery so you need to research who has the expertise to perform such a procedure and whether your husband is a candidate. My husband went through the procedure in Nov.and although reoccurrence is likely, we are having some peace and chemo free days. Lisa

    Thank you I will !! I was a little disappointment that our specialist hasn't made us aware of all our options wether they be in that hospital or another I suppose I that's asking too much ,,
    Thank goodness your husband is doing well, where did he have his treatment ? I've seen Basingstoke and the Christe hospitals both foundation so not sure if we have a pay or contribute ??

    Hello your story is so much like ours, my husband dx Aug 10, colon op then first line chemo for 6 months. Then Ct 10 months later showed it had spread to peritoneum and one spot on liver and lung, 2nd line chemo stated July 11, so far so good, he is also on palliative chemo, I have asked about HIPEC, but in england the NHS do not do this surgery, but I have heard good results with this, also because he has cancer in other areas its not suitable. Send my good luck to you both, my husband is 54, so still so very young.

    Sorry for your husband's diagnosis. Don't know anything about the UK, but wishing you the best possible care in your husband's treatment. Let us know how he is doing. There are so many on this board that can give you advice as to what your husband has. You have come to a very caring group that is here whenever you need it.

    My husband had his surgery done at The James, Ohio State University. I hope you find a doctor to give you some options of hope. Lisa

    Thank you to everyone such kind words

    So far so good . My husbands oncologists called me on Friday with great news that a hospital close to us are currently setting up a unit to offer HIPEC treatment the down side is we still don't know if he is a candidate for treatment the upside is that we are moving forward and an option may be there even if it adds a few more years rather than months we have both said its a risk worth taking. no one knows how anyone will respond to surgery / treatment.
    Now my job is to keep him healthy, strong minded and focused on the future.
