How do you calculate survival time?

How does one calculate survival time - do you begin counting from date of diagnosis, or the end of first line of chemo?

    Survival time
    By "one," I assume you mean those who publicize the survival stats one can find on the net. I think most of those are taken from date of diagnosis.
