pain meds

I am totally confused about this pain med issue. I went for almost 2 years toughing it out, because I'm deathly afraid of the horror stories I hear about people getting addicted to them. But as my disease progresses so does the pain, so I started asking. I am highly allergic to codeine yet it seems to be in every prescription they give me. The newest on is Hydrocordone, which I just looked up on the computer and it's prescribed for coughs. It keeps me up all night and I have scratched most of the skin off my arms and legs. It was prescribed to me last weekend when I was in the hospital, not by my admitting doc or my onc, just an associate. I mean, it does take the pain away, but the side effects are miserable. I don't see my gi doc until the 19th and I don't know what to do. Sadly the only thing that I have found that takes the pain away and lets me sleep is morphine, but they only administer it while I'm in the hospital. Do any of y'all take anything that I could ask my doc about? Prayers, Melodie

    Pain
I take 800 mg ibuprofen for pain. It gets me moving. Can't take it right now as I am going for breast biopsy on Friday. I have been taking codeine with Tylenol in the evenings on the nights the nerve pain in my leg is bad. I have been taking Benadryl for the crazy burning, itching skin. I dont think anything really takes the pain away, just dulls it.

Kids love anything with wheels, sounds like a fun time.

Have they come up with a game plan for treating your hep c?

    Morphine
I was on low doses of morphine after leaving the hospital. I had to be weaned off gradually. It helped the pain, but was difficult to get off. Not sure which was worse the pains or the shakes.

Sounds like you might be allergic to your pain med. I didn't find that pain meds helped much with the pain- maybe took the edge off a little. I took unisom to sleep each night(it is really an antihistamine). Also, try acupuncture;. it balances out your energy and helps with the pain.

    I send you hugs

I'm allergic to codene and antihistimines, I can't take ibiprophin, cuz I'm a bleeder. So I'm kinda stuck. They have mentioned darvocet or something like that. I guess I'll just keep trying different things. Thanks, Melodie

    Hi Melbas
At one point I was the Queen of pain meds! I took 300mg of Morphine throughout the day and wore a 100mg Fentanyl pain patch. I was pretty severe though and found that it knocked me out, but it was the only way I could move around or sleep. I don't reccommend anybody taking that much because I've been pain med free for a little over a year and now realize that part of my memory during that time is gone. Guess I was in just kind of a daze! Anyway my point is there are a lot of pain options available. You may want to try the Fentanyl patch I believe they make them in 50mg strength. It is imperative you get some help with your pain or severe pain can make you even sicker by zapping all your energy. They always try to give you the lowest available pain killer, but if isn't working and are having side effects like you are please contact your doctor immediately! You do not have to wait for your next appt. call and talk to his nurse. Yes, it was hell getting off all that Morphine since I took it for 4 years, but it really did help. Without it I couldn't walk, stand up straight, sit and so on. Don't suffer anymore than you have too! You're going through enough! They also make Morphine in several different doses, but I found the patch to help the best because you just put it on & you are good for 24 hours without any peaks & lows you get with taking pills. I hope you find something that helps soon!
