Does anyone know if ALL patient is qualified for disability??? Please let me Know

My daughter was just dx with ALL. How do we go about disability, and what do we do about her job. I am so confused and devasted, I don't know where to turn to for help in this matter. Thanks June

    It shouldn't be a problem you can get a letter from your specialist which will help, there are dozens of forms to fill out and there will be an assessment, the sooner you register to apply the better, even if it takes two months, they will backdate your claim. You can also apply for careers allowance.

    We have started the papers. Yes, lots of forms. Thanks again and if you get a chance can you please explain what career Allowance is. Kerry are you a survivor of ALL? If so I would love to talk to you. I have noticed not much interaction goes on this particular forum. Hope all is well with you and once again thanks. june

    Sorry I meant carer's allowance. I was diagnosed in Jan 2010 and have had eight rounds of hyper C-Vad, POMP and more recently ICE. I am booked for more chemo and total body irradiation next month for a salvage bone marrow transplant, feeling very positive and hoping I will be viable :-)

    I'm not sure about your daughter's job, hope things are similar to mine. My story is that after applying and being accepted for FMLA (Family amd Medical Leave Act - federal law) I was placed on long term disability by my work's insurance company (also the benefit provider for my work), The HR person at her work should have all the info and the benefits coordinator will have the info on FMLA.

    After being placed on Long Term Disability (LTD), I was made to apply for SS disabilty (a common occurance I understand) and was given help by reps from the insurance co. that was paying my LTD. Surprise, surprise, after all the applications were in and I had almost finished my treatment, I was put on SS disability after only my first application! I was told by a SS employee that they try to get cancer pt claims done as quickly as possible - mine was about 6 mos.

    Now several things could affect your daughter's case. I worked for a fairly large employer (a hospital) so we have a pretty big insurance co and decent benefits. Not all employers have to follow the guidelines for FMLA. It has to do with number of employees and such, and I will say that being on SSI is not such a great thing. It helps, but it isn't all that much money. I'm down over 1K/month in salary - thank god for my retirement from another job and my spouse working. Also, within 3 - 5 yrs of going on SSI, you will be assesed again to see if your disability is still considered dibilitating. I'm not sure how all that will work out - just have to wait and see I guess.

    Point is though, get into her HR office and ask questions!! It's always easier if you have people who have dealt with these types of cases before. They may be able to send you to the right places to get your ? answered. Also check with the different societies out there. Many offer financial help both on the state and national level. They have been a godsend for me and the wife!
