My Dad Passed Away - October 2nd

I did not get to post to this site much since I only found it a month ago. But I wanted to let you know that I did read as many stories as I could and was able to find answers to alot of my questions from this site. It is so heartbreaking to see how terrible this disease is. My dad went from healthy and happy in May to his passing a few days ago. I just wanted to share his story in case it will help someone else in the future. My dad was given Mitomycin (by his choice) on August 30th. The doctor told him that it would make him pretty weak but he was already weak so he didn't think it would be too bad. Well, it was horrible to say the least. He ended up having a heart attack and stroke on September 19th. I think the mitomycin just caused too much stress on his body. Of course that is just my opinion. He went home from the hospital on September 29th on hospice. The blood thinners they had given him in the hospital for the heart attack and stroke had caused him to bleed internally. They told us they assume the bleeding was from the tumors but they could not do exploratoy surgery to find out because he was too weak. He passed away on October 2nd at home surrounded by his close family and friends. I was grateful for the time we had, but the whole 3.5 months went by extremely fast. The point I wanted everyone to know was that if you are offered Mitomycin, unless you are in really good shape, DO NOT take it. I hope this will help someone with their decision in the future. I plan to keep reading updates on this site and will post if I feel I can be helpful. I wish you all the best. I will continue to pray for all of you.

    Heather,

Thank you so much for sharing your father's story and experience. I am so very sorry for your traumatic experience with the beast of a disease. I pray that you find peace and comfort in getting to spend those months with your father, amidst a terrible thing such as EC. It truly is a horrible disease and I hope that others will read this and gain some insight from your valuable posting.

    Prayers of peace and love,
    Michelle

Prayers for your family and in honor of your father. Thank you for sharing the information about the medication.

No one on here tries to make decisions for anyone else, but each and every person who posts is either seeking information or providing information that only experience with the battle of esophageal cancer can provide. Each bit of knowledge helps the next person in the fight. While one person's experience with medicine might not be the next person's, it gives the patient/caregiver knowledge to make informed decisions and knowledge to ask essential questions.

Although when we first land here so frightened and trying to learn what to do, we stay because we are comforted by the fine people who share from their heart and from their pain. It creates a desire within us to try to help each member as best we can. Your thoughtful post is a fine example of caring. Deepest sympathy. BMG

    Deepest sympathies from us both...
    Heather,
Thank you SO much for sharing your dad's story with us.
My heart goes out to you and I cry and pray for you.

I am a stage IV and in your dad's shoes. I can empathize with his journey except for the chemotherapy. Reading that, I am so glad I didn't do any, again.

I HAVE to agree with BMGky though, as it is a VERY personal experience with these chemo drugs and many others may just heal or get help from the very drug that takes someone else out...

God bless you and keep you, Heather.
