Tahini Butter for platelet counts
Upon the recommendation of someone on this board I ordered through Amazon.com tahini butter. How much am I to eat of it daily, and how? Like a big dummy I ate a spoonful right from the jar. Thought I was going to get sick, but forced it down What's a pleasant way to get this in me daily. LOL! I do love food,a little too much, but this tasted just awful!!! Blood platelets are the only blood counts I am having trouble with. I have one more treatment of carbo/taxol with Avaistan left scheduled for Oct. 18.
Thanks,
Carla

Tahini Butter
Carla,
That would have been me who recommended it. I don't care for the taste either, but some people like it. You should eat 2 tablespoons per day. You might try mixing it with something that masks the taste. Or you could mix it into salad dressing and put it on a salad. It is just ground up sesame seeds. Please let me know if it works for you. I haven't heard of anyone that it hasn't.
Bon apetite!0 -
You can mix it into
salad dressing or stir it into hummus (sp?) or other bean dips. It's also yummy heated through with honey or other sweetener if you are not bothered about the sugar content. You get a sort of halva and can adjust the amount so it is less sweet than the commercial versions0 -
Okay Ladies, I got it down
Okay Ladies, I got it down this morning with no problem. I added some honey to it. Still wasn't quite right, so I added about 6 chocolate chips. LOL! Know I shouldn't have, but there wasn't any other way of getting it down.0 -

Soon you'll be looking forward to it every morning. I would have gone for the chocolate chips myself.0 -

Lol, I love halva...I might just over dose on the sweetner though. I like Tahini and would most likely just eat it on crackers or the like. Considering that I should just get it. I have low counts.0 -
I'm wondering if you've misunderstood the recommendation. Tahini is a very strong ANTI-platelet food. It would be good to eat if you have too many platelets, I suppose (check with a medical professional on that), but not good if you have too few. I love tahini but my platelets are chronically low, so now I will sadly have to forgo it! I'm too new in the group to post links, apparently, but just google "tahini and platelets" and lots of stuff will come up. Try to find a scientific article. There's one in the European Journal of Hematology called "Thrombocytopenia as an adverse effect of complementary and alternative medicines, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, foods, and beverages*" Tahini and quinine are the most notorious foods for lowering platelet count, but there are others, and also some drugs that do the same.

I am very confused about tahini. I too have read that it contributes to lowering platelet counts. Since my platelet count it low I have stopped eating tahini, hummus, halva and sesame oil. A serious issue for me since these used to be a part of my regular diet.
Can anyone expand on this. Is the problem with anything that contains crushed sesame? Is sesame seeds off limits as well for people with low platelet counts?
