HPV antiviral medications?

Since this is my second bout with an HPV related cancer, (advanced cervical in 1976), I'm kind of looking down the road here. Does anyone know what doctors, if any treat this HPV16? Aids patients get a lot of antiviral cocktails. Are any of them for HPV?

By the way, I am doing pretty well. next appointment is for digital rectal, September 26.
Thanks for all your posts. I have been reading but didn't feel like posting very much. There were some tough days after the last treatment.

    I can totally relate to your comment about the rough days right after treatment--that was my worst time. I'm glad to hear you are doing well and I wish you all the best with your upcoming follow-up appt. If there is any treatment for HPV16, you might want to check out the website for they Dysplasia Clinic at the University of California San Francisco. I know of someone who is being treated there for dysplasia (atypical cells) post-treatment for anal cancer almost 2 years ago. They have been monitored closely and told that should these cells progress, there are treatments that can be done. They did not elaborate on what those treatments were, however. Just check it out and take a look at Dr. Berry's profile.

    I too worry about HPV 16. It was present in my tumor and I worry about recurrence, however my colorectal surgeon and oncologist (both researchers as well) at a major teaching institution are not aware of any research related to recurrence being greater in those with HPV 16. That being said, I still worry about dysplasia and future issues. Thank you for the site at UCSF ... they deal with quite a bit of anal cancer and anal dysplasia.

    Hang in there Sandy. I too read quite a bit but don't always post. See my response to martha ... HPV 16 is a worry, however my physicians say the radiation tends to kill most everything in the anal area, but, like you, I worry still. I had squamous dysplasia of the cervix in 1988 .. it was biopsied and never returned, however I need to have my PAP and DNA probe for HPV every year. I worry too about my vulva and vagina and request my GYN to visually check my vagina and vulva well during exams and may ask about the value of random cell scraping of the vagina and vulva for early detection, and the fact is many oral cancers are related to high risk HPV ... so we are all quite smart to keep up with our preventative exams on all levels. I too do not hear of any treatment for HPV 16 or other high risk HPV types. There are unique ways of detecting an monitoring high grade dysplasia of the anus ... and it seems any woman with cervial cancer or cervical dysplasia should receive routine anal paps as a general rule ... this would serve us well. Frankly, I never had anal sex and asked my colo rectal surgeon about this. She said HPV migrates from our vagina/cervix through menstrual blood and discharge into the anus ... so this puts those of us who had cervical dysplasia or cancer at risk for this disease. I am very pro the HPV vaccine at this point ... too bad it wasn't around earlier for us ... as you can see, this is an issue for our generation ... 50 - 60 something women. Hugs to you dear woman ... hang in there.

    In 1976 I had a hysterectomy for cervical cancer. I was 26. I was so grateful I already had a child.
