Mom's cancer

My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer last month Adenocarcinoma, she was scheduled to have a lobectomy yesterday, things changed when the PET-Scan result came in. The Dr. noticed that there were some questionable spots on her lymph nodes, so instead of surgery a biopsy was done on the lymph nodes. I asked the Doctor worse case scenario, he said if the biopsy came back positive for cancer she will no longer be able to have the surgery and will have to do other treatments either chemo or radiation. Okay I can handle that, until mom tells me if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes she will NOT do any other treatment. I just don't know what too do, she is 82 years old and has lived a wonderful life until dad passed in 2001 of lung cancer, since then she hasn't been the same. I respect my moms wishes and understand why she doesn't want to go through chemo. But, I just don't know what to do now...how does one prepare for something like this?

    Sorry to hear that.
    All the best to your Mom. I would say encouraging things about chemo and radiation (worked great for me so far), but I'm not sure it would be quite right to compare a 59-year-old in excellent physical shape (otherwise) to an 82 year old. I really don't know what I would do in that situation. She might still elect to take my attitude, which was "I'll try anything ... once."

    Regarding staging, there are a lot of variables, but I believe if it has spread to lymph nodes in the chest, it's stage 3 by definition, regardless of anything else.
