Moms going tomorrow morning for VATS Pleurodesis
Got RT Lung drained today (the amount of a pepsi can they said) went well. Sending out fluid to test for everything known to man kind they said.
Today the Onc. said I would really like to have you see the surgeon to have him do the VATS only because you were just here on the 12th of July and had LT Lung drained and you are back already.
Surgeon said they put in a talc in the Lung?
Mom's a wreck-anesthegia, complications, cancer, anxiety what next she says??
Oh surgeon says this is part of it all its part of the pkg...really
Please help us...
Thanks so much and God Bless

I had the talc procedure
The Docs blow a little talc into the lung to prevent repeated pleural effusion. An added benefit is that the talc keeps new tumors from growing!
Best of luck to your mom,

I recall my procedure was video-assisted but I don't remember much pain (maybe my brain is hiding it from me?) , or at least I only had some "discomfort" a couple of times, not during the entire procedure. I also had a drain for a while, and because the doc did a bad job, it had to be replaced - I wouldn't tell your mom that, though!
Much luck to your mom and you,

Tell me your thoughts...
Mom had the radiologist drain the RT Lung yest. signed the consent for Rt Lung than today went and had her rt lung talked and lt lung drained was the signed consent however surgeon told Dad and I to sit down after this so called 15min surg turned into 1 1/2hr that he had seen the band aid on the LT side and got confused so he continued to make an incision there and had seen a lot more bleeding than should have and when he got in there was alot of trama with alot of clotting so he drained all the clot/bleeding and talced that instaed of the Rt side as planned and than went to the rt and just drained all this yellow fluid.
Mom needless to say is in so much pain switching from morphine alternating with percocet. Her blood ct dropped now needs a transfusion pulled from her room to now Imcu to keep a very close eye now.
Surgeon comes in theres no one to blame, blame me he says who knows when the clotting started etc...goes on and on. They know we are very upset by what happened!!
Tell me how this happens do you know??? Moms so upset and is very scared to go back for the other lung in a cple of wks has lost convidence.
Its just one of many things that have gone wrong really!!!

You didn't have this done at Nyack Hospital, did you? When they're good they're very good, but sometimes they royally screw up!
I'm so sorry, your poor Mom!
I wish I knew how this happens, or why it happens, I'm sure you would feel better if there was someone to blame. Maybe you should blame the surgeon, as he himself suggests, and your Mom has every right to be upset!
The odds of this happening again are incredibly low, however, and I would think that the team of docs would MAKE SURE it never happens again. You could ask to have someone oversee the operation, maybe that would allay some of your Mom's fear.
I'm so sorry, again,
my best hopes and wishes,

All her proceedures/surgeries/stays has been with Valley Hospital in Ridegwood.
I just cant explaine the amt. of mess ups that have taken place, but this one is the iceing on the cake!
She's not going to want to leave the Doctors she sees its just to much, however it has taught Dad and I to open our mouths a bit more and dont get all hush hush
I dont know why the surgeon would want the blame really...you sign consents and rad did wrong side (which he should have or still come and see her I think)so surgeon had seen something wrong so he started in the wrong side to investigate so thats supposedly why it was don the wrong side (I think to seal it up with the talc and stop the bleeding as well)!
I have never seen Doc's cover up for eachother as much as we have its so crazy, they all scramble like mouses in the hallway...Well she has reeived blood now do to the loss and hopefully being placed in a normal room again not upstairs in IMCC??
Hey I asked the surgeon about talc having the extra benefit of new growths and he said it doesnt stop it. So is he not the one to ask that is it the Onc that we never see in the Hosp. I just want to keep Mom's spirits up and if she continues to hear positive enforcement it will keep her going.
Hope to be able to talk to you soon
Thanks again for all your wishes0
