Black Tongue

"don't worry about it" ?
I agree, 'don't worry about it' wouldn't be an acceptable diagnosis. Like you, I'd want to know WHY IT WAS HAPPENING.
Then I could decide whether to worry or not. I'm trying to imagine the convo you had:
Greend: Hey doc, I have big black spots on my tongue, what's causing them, what does it mean?
Greend's MD: Don't worry about it!
Greend: Ok cool, I won't. Thanks, that's a load off my mind!0 -

And you are doing 10 - 12 per day....that just might be what's causing the black tongue...I have no idea why.
Not sure what you were doing before for calories..But as an experiment, you might wanna cut the Ensure and go back to the other for a week or so.
I could go back.....it was called food. :>)0
