My Mom is scheduled for her liver resection surgery on 7/12 to remove the (2) spots on her liver. They said the surgery can last from 6-7 hours.

Just asking for prayers - thank you.

Liz

    you got it
    Hi Liz,

I will most definitely pray for your mom. She should come through this fine. I know from experience it's scary going into such a major surgery, but I did okay. When I had mine (5/08), I woke up to the thought that I'd never be able to move again without pain, but a couple of days later I was already doing much better & they got me up walking on the 2nd day. There were 2 or 3 difficult days in the hospital at first (mainly with my pain pump coming out of my back where they put it in & getting sick from the other pain meds they gave me- they finally worked it out & found something that helped well without making me sick)., After the first couple of days of difficulty, things started turning around and I actually healed pretty quickly. Literally 7 weeks after my surgery, my family went on vacation and I even rode a horse and went on a whitewater rafting excursion. Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing to do so quickly, but I didn't hurt anymore and I enjoyed those activities with no problem at all! So remember that when you see your mom in a bit of pain at first- it will pass :) I know age and health prior to having the surgery definitely has lots to do with how quickly or not someone heals, though. Please keep us informed as to how it goes.

Thank you Lisa. I will be
Thank you Lisa. I will be sure to tell her about you riding a horse and whitewater rafting, however, I'm sure she will pass on those excursions while we visit Punta Cana Dominquin Rep. in Feb. 2012. My Mom is a tough, and I'm confident that she will recover.

Lisa, did you have chemo treatments after your liver resection?

    Again, thanks for prayers.

    No, but wish I had
I am now going to a different oncologist, because I discovered later that my first oncologist really didn't do a few things correctly along this journey. Not having me be on any kind of chemo after surgery is one of them (they call it adjuvant chemotherapy when it's after surgery). When I later changed to another oncologist, he told me he would have definitely had me take chemo after the surgery to get any cancer cells that were missed or that were possibly floating around in me. I've heard from some sources (don't know if it's actually true or not) that sometimes surgery itself can even stir up the cancer cells and break them loose to float around in the body- this would explain why it might be a good reason to take chemo after surgery.

    Praying for your mom
Prayers are on their way. I had liver resection surgery in October and was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. Pain was managed and even though I had a few challenges along the way (like not being able to poop!) my recovery was uneventful. I also had occupational therapy for several weeks when I came home which was very helpful. Keep up the appetite and encourage lots of protein.
