Food Ideas and Such

Hi everybody!

I hope all is well or getting that way for everyone out there. I've posted recently that I am six weeks over my last of 33 rad treatments for tonsil cancer. The doctor (and most folks here on this board) said the rads continue to work their magic for three months afterwards.
So, I am slowly working my way to eating solid foods again. If I swig a big of Mary's Magic I can do pretty well with soft stuff like omelets, grits, rice, etc. I made the mistake a few days ago of taking a sip of my daughter's Chick Filet lemonade. I just about had to bite my tongue off it hurt so bad. However, I am hoping some of you out there can share some ideas because I am getting very tired of eggs and grits and mashed potatoes. I know it's going to get better and I'm not going to develop a sense of impatience.
Also, has anybody ever been prescribed Roxicet for the pain as well as the Mary's Magic? Up until two nights ago I was taking a couple of tablespoons before bed. Initially it helped put me to sleep but lately it just puts me in kind of a happy place but it no longer makes me sleepy. I'd like to continue with it until all my throat issues go away.
Just looking for ideas for food and any comments from you great folks out there that have taken Roxicet.
I'll continue to pray for each and every one of you because for me there is nothing that makes me feel better than knowing there are folks out there praying.

    Hi Kent,
    Mom just finished

    Hi Kent,
Mom just finished rads for tonsil ca. She has been living on omelets, honey nut cheerios ( lets it get soagy in milk), french toast (thin bread + syrup), wonton and egg drop soup, lo mein, and angel hair pasta in white clam sauce. she likes cucumbers, bananas and avacodoes. off course everything is plain no spices. She also drinks many different types of protein shakes as well.

just curious if you had radiation to both sides or just one? chemo?

    hope your feeling better everyday!

I had Roxy, but I was on so
I had Roxy, but I was on so much fentanyl and I was so tiny, it was too much to use for my break through pain. I still have about 1/2 a bottle left and I have had to use it a couple times in the past two years when I have had serious pain. It works well.

As far as food goes, besides my main source of nourishment, smoothies, you could try oatmeal, savory or sweet, a stew or soup of soft cooked veggies, like carrots, zucchini, summer squash, celery, and potatoes, use no salt stock if you have issues with salt burning. I did. You can do a veggie soup or a chicken soup, I don't know if you can swallow meat yet, and make it with a lot of broth, and make dumplings to drop in the broth. I just use Bisquick and follow the directions for dumplings. You could also use it to try pancakes. Off the top of my head more ideas:

    Ratatouille
    Avocado and Black Bean Salad
French Toast. Stuffed with fresh fruit, like banana is nice
    Mushroom Barley Soup
    Tuscan Bean Soup
    Lentil Soup with tiny pasta
    Potato chowder

Or do cold summer soups, like:
Vissychoise Cold potato and leek soup
    Pea and Mint Soup
Red Bell Pepper Soup with a Basil Cream Garnish

Roasted Red Bell Peppers and Fresh Soft Mozzarella
    Couscous
    Bulgur Wheat Salad

Gotta go up to my parents for dads birthday cake. Gotta run.

    Chemo and Radiation
I didn't have any chemo treatments and all of my radiation was on the right side of my neck. Matter of fact, the doctor only took out my right tonsil.

I just finished eating some mashed potatoes with gravy. The interesting thing is that after I recovered from my tonsilectomy but before the effects of radiation started, I had lost all sense of taste. Now the taste is coming back fast and furious. Those potatoes were certainly good!

    Thanks for the ideas!!

    Great Ideas!
Wow, what great food ideas! I'm going to get busy this weekend. No solid meats for me like steak but I can do meatballs in small quantities. One food that I had last week was the canned spaghetti and meatballs. However, I quickly tire of those things (how we change from childhood!!)

I've been worried about getting addictded to the wonderful feeling I get when I take that Roxy in the evenings. I am hesitant about asking the doctor for a refill but may do so just to have it available while my mouth finishes healing.

    Thank you for the tips!

btw, I bet the best birthday present for your Dad is just having you there!

    I ate spaghett-os a couple
I ate spaghetti-os a couple times, and those canned raviolis that I can't even think of the name right now. I figure as soon as I stuck the first bite in my mouth, my great grandmother, Madalena Ristuccia, did two full revolutions in her coffin. ;-) LOL
Hey, my mouth was fried and I was trying anything to eat some damn food.

Birthday cake was good. Step mom made a three layer chocolate cake with whipped cream icing. I actually ate a full small piece. You are right about my father being glad I am still this side of the grass. I did lose a younger brother in 1993.

I figure the soups can be easy to make if you use canned beans that you rinse if you don't want to use dried beans. If you can't manage to swallow it, you can definitely then purée those soups. Oh, and the cold summer soups, the Mint Pea, Cold Potato Soup, and the Red Pepper are meant to be served puréed.

I have been wanting to figure out how to get a cookbook published for those of us dealing with treatment and the more permanent side effects some of us have to deal with when I comes to eating. Hoping Rozaroo will be my marketing girl. Lol. she has great ideas. I just have to figure out how to do it and not lose money. I don't have any of that to spare. ;-)

Yeah, the Roxicet only gave me that floating on a cloud feeling twice. Mostly I was in so much damn pain, it barely took the pain away. Happy healing, be well.

    Sweet
