Sister is out of surgery

in Ovarian Cancer #1
My sister had her hysterectomy and debulking today. The surgeon said he removed all the cancer he could see and feel. He also had to re-sect some of her intestine and ended up removing about a foot of it. He also removed her appendix, omentum and sucked out a bunch of small tumors around her diaphragm etc. He said ovarian cancer is like spray paint throughout your abdomen. He also placed a port in her abd and said we will discuss chemo in a few days to decide where it will be done, what and, how much. She has a NG tube and a drain in her abd. They drained about 2 liters of fluid outta there. She also had a blood transfusion. Her Magnesium levels were low so they replaced that. And, she had an epidural and foley catheter placed. Her pain appears to be well managed at this point. They were giving her Benadryl before I left because she was itchy- probably related to the epidural And, I requested that she get Ativan since she is super anxious about the NG tube.     In my prayers
    So so sorry she had to go thru such a thing. She is so young to be faced with all this. Just heartbreaking. My two girls are her age. Hopefully the doctor did get the most of it and chemo will clean up the rest. I pray that she stays strong and has a good recovery. Take one day at a time. Seems impossible at first but things should get better. Keep us posted. Let her know we are all pulling for her and she is in my prayers.

    I hope and pray that all goes well for your sister. Please keep us updated on her progress. I had surgery May 18. I begin chemo next Tuesday. This is tough, but family support is SO important. It sounds as if your sister is blessed with you!!

    She is so lucky her surgeon placed the IP port, with the bowel resection and all. Mine would not. I was so upset.

    You asked about surgery and recovery recently. I would say it depends on the person's prior health and the extent of their surgery. My mom was stage 4 and recovered fairly well. No complications and she was able to begin chemo 2 weeks later.

    Everyone is different.

    my doctor would place an ip port either
    because of my bowel resection. She told me it wasn't recommended because chemo in the abdomen would make me sick and that it is painful. So I had chemo in my veins every month. I guess it depends on your doctors ...val

    I'll be praying for your sister's complete recovery. Sounds like her doctor is thorough, and has a good plan for her treatment. Have her just focus on recovery right now, getting her strength back. May I ask what state your are in? Her doctor sounds super, just like mine.

    I live in
    We live in New Hampshire and will be traveling to Massachusetts for her treatments. We are meeting with her gyn/oncologist on Tuesday to further discuss stage/type and chemo. Her Dr. wants chemo to start next week. She came home on Wednesday. She is still very sore, pale and having a very hard time sleeping. She was very thin to begin with at 123lbs and currently weighs 108lbs..I hate this.

    I had very similar surgery
    and chemo, etc. and that was 5 years ago. I'm also a small person and I lost a lot of weight with the surgery. Most of us gain it all back and then some. You'll hear about many of us who are going through chemo complaining that we never have been heavier. Chemo will not be as scary as it sounds. I'm so glad that you will be with her. Please come back and let us know what chemo she will be given and we'll help you with what to expect.
