My husband and I attended a class last night for lymphedema and nutrition given by a local dietician who specializes in oncology and lymphedema patients. Here are some important tips she talked about that I wanted to share:
1. Drink tons of water. It helps to break up the protein-rich lymph fluid and move it along better.
2. Obesity/weight gain increases lymphedema or the likelihood of it starting.
3. Eat a lot of plant foods--they help to reduce inflammation.
4. Restrict sodium intake--less than 1500 mg./day (less than 1 teaspoon).
5. Eat whole foods whenever possible--they provide less chemicals, less sodium, more nutrients
6. Use herbs for seasoning in place of butter/oils.
7. Eat small amounts of protein throughout the day (3-4 oz. per meal)
8. Ginger and tumeric are good anti-inflammatory items
9. Eat more omega 3 fats--fatty fish, grass-fed animals, walnuts, eggs
Some of you probably know some of these tips and are following them already. Just wanted to share.
Hugs, Renee
