Stage 4 Gastric Cancer

Hi, all,
My sister is 47 years old and was just diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. She was being offered palliative chemotherapy and was given a 1 in 5 chance of surviving 1 year. With those statistics, I emailed Dr. Avital at the NIH. He is studying stomach cancer. She has been accepted into his study. My sister's care at the NIH is free. Hotel rooms in the area are not. We are waiting to hear from him as to whether or not she will be randomized to the surgery followed by chemotherapy or the chemotherapy arm. I would also like to recommend a book that I have found very helpful; it is Anticancer - A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD. It talks about the importance of eating antioxidants and avoiding high glycemic index foods and explains why. It talks about exercise and meditation. Basically, what he says is that every cancer survival curve has a tail - and you want to be in that tail. I wish you all the very best. My heart goes out to all of you. I know the pain that we have felt with my sister's diagnosis and can only imagine the pain that you are feeling. May God Bless you all.
