in Lung Cancer #1
On April 6th of this year I underwent a wedge resection of the lower lobe, performed through VATS, 3 incisions were required for the surgery, one of the incisions was slower in healing than the other 2. I had post-op follow up appointments and was told everything looked good. I still continued to keep my eye on this one incision, and glad I did. I went back to the Surgeons office two days ago due to this incision being infected. Unfortunately my Surgeon was scheduled in surgery all day, so I saw one of the other surgeons who looked at the incision, and said "It is not a deep wound infection and that it should take care of itself". No antibiotics were prescribed, along with no maintenance instructions. When I left the office, I started thinking I have never heard of any infection "Taking care of itself". Especially with a lung cancer patient, and one who had developed pneumonia shortly after surgery. This does not sound right to me, and I would like to know if it sounds right to you? Not sure what to do.

    Second opinion
    Have you gone to your primary care physician so he or she can look at it? Your local doc should be able to give you a quick second opinion. If you are running a fever, if the incision is swollen, hot to the touch, or otherwise looking seriously troubled it is worth a quick trip to the nearest med center pronto. You could also talk to the nurse practioner/surgical nurse for some advice on how to handle it. Nurses have tons more time for patients and know when to refer if things are getting out of hand.
