Upcoming Scan

in Thyroid Cancer #1
I am starting my LID diet on Monday and my scan starts the week of May 9th. I haven't been told by my Dr. of any precautions I should take if any after being given the RAI pill. I will take the pill that the nurse will be double gloved handing it to me with tongs after taking it out of a steel container, the day before my scan. I hate the thought of swallowing something they give me like that, but can't remember if there is any precautions about being around people....

    The nuclear medicine people will tell you when they give it to you, at least they did in my case.

    It depends on where you live, most states stipulate certain precautions. It also depends on which RAI you're given, I-131 is much more dangerous than I-123. It also depends to a lesser degree on the amount you're given.

    I was given I-123 on 4/12 {for a scan on 4/13}, and was put under no precautions at all. I was then given I-131 on 4/14 and had a whole list of precautions.

    Scan Dose?
    If it's just a scan dose, you can be around people. If you are taking a treatment dose that is different.

    Thanks, I couldn't remember. It is a scan so it probably won't be a high dose. It just seems like there were some precautions I took for the last scan so I will see when I get there. Do they normally do labs before your scan, just curious as my Dr. has changed my instructions a few time since I had to reschedule my scan....

    Scan Dose
    Usually the scan dose doesn't require precautions to other people. It isnt' strong enough to harm anyone. You still have to do the LID so that the dose will take up in your cells, but this dose is nothing like the treatment dose. Sometimes they do labs but normally it's not needed unless they are looking for cancer. If this is the case they will do your TSH levels, Tg and TgAB before or after your scan dose.

    Yup, Sunny's right. The dose size is much more important. My I-123 dose was only 2 mCi. My I-131 dose was 75 mCi.

    Thanks to you both. I started the LID yesterday (remember my Dr. said it wasn't necessary) and I see why Alan lost weight....my stomach isn't use to all this fruit and other unusual things I don't normally eat. They are going to do the bloodwork you mentioned above Julie the day before my scan so I am assuming it will be two thyrogen injections, the RAI on Wed. labs on Thursday and the scan on Friday. This is the first time my husband has ever gone with me and taken off from work, although he won't be much use in the kitchen, he can drive me places. The drive from Florida to SC for the week of my scan will be rough, but I am a survivor and will make it...:)

    Thanks for the smile...:) True, I tend to get a little grouchy when I get hungry...lol
