Does Having Radiation Rule Out Future Surgery

I read a statement where someone said that having radiation treatments rules out being able to have future surgery. Does anyone know if this is true. I'm trying to decide whether to have radiation along with chemo on my grade 2 Oligodendroglioma. This might help me make the decision. Thanks.

    Please ask your doctor to be sure...but I believe that you can have surgery after radiation. I think you could have multiple surgeries if that became necessary. However--except for some rare instances--I think that you can only have radiation one time.

    Please post updates and let us know what you decide and how you are doing. I hope that you will feel encouraged and have a sense of hope as you make the decisions about what treatment options you will begin. I know that once my son decided on his treatment options and began the treatments, we felt a lot better and much more hopeful. Even though the treatments were tough, it felt really good to be going foward. I guess what I am trying to say is that you are in a very hard place right now, but better days are ahead! I wish I would have known how good we would be doing today, back when David was first diagnosed. (David is my 27 year old son who was diagnosed with an anaplastic (grade 3) oligodendroglioma in May of 2009.) It would have helped a lot to know that things could--and would--get better.

    Hi there,
    Having radiation does not rule out future surgery. My daughter has AA3 and had a crainiotomy to remove her tumor followed by 35 radiation treatments and temodar. Unfortunetley, her tumor started to grow back. She has had 3 surgeries since radiation. The only thing her doctors have said is that it is hard to do pathology testing on radiated cells, so it is almost impossible to see if the cells went up a grade or have stayed the same. I am not sure if Oligodendroglioma responds the same way. Good luck

    It shouldn't. My mom had surgery for a Grade III Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma in August 1996 and then again in April 2009 when it came back. She had a craniotomy, chemo, radiation and a stem cell transplant the first time. I say, go after it with all you've got. Kick that cancer's @$$.
