disability
Hi Greybeard,
I haven't posted in a long time, but felt the need to respond to your thread. I understand how you feel, however, I think you should consider yourself lucky that you qualify for disability. I have been dealing with cancer for 7 years and haven't been able to work for the last 5. I spent many years as a stay at home mom to my seven children. I qualify medically, but never paid in enough money to qualify for disability because I didn't work long enough outside my home. I now live on spousal support and although I get by ok, my life would be a lot easier if I did have disability also. I just thought I'd throw another perspective in to the pot.
take care,
Jamie0 -

I know this is difficult for someone who has worked all his life. It sounds like you are able to do many things, so redefining yourself a little is a good idea. I can't add much to all the great suggestions people have given you, but it does sound like mentoring + teaching are naturals. Some of my siblings + their spouses have taken early retirement + are filling their lives with exercise, hobbies (including take up new ones), helping to look after grandchildren, etc. You still are Greybeard + you may even enjoy the new version of you. Good luck!0 -

I had 1/2 completed my soc sec disability form online (planning on completing it when I had more info and stamina) when the local office contacted me the following day and said get down here and we will get the process rolling a.s.a.p. so there definitely seems to be a fast track for cancer patients, in fact during the online application if you type in cancer for reason for disability a box will pop up asking you if the disability is terminal etc, if you answer yes they automatically contact the local soc sec office for you (at least they did for me here in Ohio).....anyhow as luck would have it I felt and looked pretty darn good when I went to the office to complete the application etc, I felt kind of odd applying for disability that day.. 24 hours later I was in bed after a morning of fevers and 3 hours of non stop shaking from a 104 temp. one more degree and I'd have gone to the E.R. all the time thinking, well if they could see me today they would understand..in the mean time I've gone back to work 1/2 days trying to get back in a position where my short term disability will cover me if/when anything changes, and I have to say its not been easy ...but taking my salary to %55 would not be easy either..0 -

My husband and I both turned in our SS paperwork last week. He has been unemployed since back surgery 2 yrs. ago. I quit my job in Jan. thinking I could get a job that involved less hours and still get by as I had paid off 2 creditors. But it was only 2 weeks later I found out I had cancer. Some days I feel as though I could go back to the 55 hrs. a week, and others I know I could not handle 20. We heard so many storied how it takes years to get approved but when we did our papers the guy said he wishes people who don't know what they're talking about would not scare peeople. We got help with our applications from a guy at the local veterans assistance center who got certified to do SS apps. So we are both waiting to hear about our financial future.0
