I am a Laboratory
I am a Laboratory Supervisor. The numbers you read can vary quite a bit. The HCT can drop to below 27 or 30 before they consider a blood transfusion. The WBC may drop to 1,000(4,000-10,000 normal). Whats more important is the granulocytes. They fight infections. Thats what the doctor looks at. They should be 40-70% of the WBCs. The Plts can drop a lot. They can drop to 10,000.(150,000-400,000 normal. The doctor will determine what to do based on the overall health of your husband. Chemo and radiation can affect the CBC.
I have experienced a lot of ups and downs with my CBC. They almost cancelled my chemo once because my neutrophils were too low. Instead they reduced my dose. They also give the drug neulasta to increase the neutrophils. I have been fighting metastatic lung cancer since last July. Every day I wake up is a blessing. Good luck. Debra0 -

Thank you, joep531857! I appreciate knowing that labs have different counts for normal, high, low. I will indeed ask from here on. bellsafire0 -

Thank you, Debra! This is great information. We are just getting started with paper work and more tests coming before a clinical trial is started. Last month, when my husband was told he had lung cancer, he was stunned. He has never lit a cigarette or tobacco product so that was the furthest kind of cancer from his or my mind. But, we now know, you don't have to be a tobacco user or exposed to second hand smoke to get lung cancer. My husband is supposedly in stage 4b and his WBC has dipped to 28 (2800); potassium is high but I don't know the number. We are "beefing up" his immune system now before trial starts with nourishing foods, pure water, exercise, proper rest, laughter and prayer chains all around our area. He feels great now but we know from experience that the "feeling great" will soon be compromised by the Chemo and trial agent. Meanwhile, I am preparing paperwork to follow my husband's treatment -every bit of it. All of the numbers you have offered and others who have offered CBC information is most helpful! I'm sure I will have other questions along the way and if I can be of any help to anyone, I will do so.
You are a trooper and I wish you every success. God Bless Us All.........bellsafire0
