Ports for Chemo

My mom,80 years old, who has been dealing with her cancer for over 4 1/2 years, will have a port inserted on Tuesday, before she begin her next and newest chemo. Thoughts on the port, good thing, bad?

    Ports
    Many cancer patients get a port installed before beginning chemotherapy. It's a huge convenience, and saves the patient from having multiple veins tapped whenever they have chemo, tests, PT scans, etc. Do a search for "ports" on this board's past discussions, and you'll find plenty of detailed information.

    I've had my Power Port since the fall of 2009, absolutely LOVE it, and have never met anyone who didn't love theirs.

    a very good thing
    I've had my port for almost 5 years and it works wonderfully. I call it my little third nipple, but actually it makes infusion much simpler.

    I did 6 rounds of chemo before getting my port.
    I did all my initial carbo/taxols without a port and could KICK myself for not getting the port sooner. A port makes life with cancer SOOOO much easier!! Since having my port inserted in late 2009, I've had chemo infusions given through it 24 times, and had 5 CT/PET scans with the contrast given through it. Think of all the needle sticks I've been saved from! A port is a GOOD thing. Chemo is very very hard on your veins and unless you are one of the rare lucky ones that only needs a handful of chemo infusions, a port is usually a necessity, and almost always a blessing.

    I had a port 'installed' prior to my first chemo in August last year, i really didn't want it but it was brilliant. I had it removed after my last treatment in Dec.

    It's a good thing
    I had mine put in when I first started the treatments (8/2006). This is about the same time your mom was DX. This really helps you with the treatments and is much easier on the veins (scaring). This is not negative at all and is not a major sugery.
