I'm at a loss as to where to seek help for my son, who has been surviving lung cancer for over a year. long story short, he just lost his job, due to seizures, and can no longer drive(was outside sales) along with his job loss went his insurance...things being what they are, I am most concerned with his mental health, and don't think he is getting the help I am sure he needs (his family seems to be in denial as to their situation) He may survive the cancer, but not the mental stress of his job loss and the financial stress associated with this? Can any one point me in the right direction of finding him help in Corpus Christi, Texas?
Just an update: to make matters even worse, today he just called to tell me his bank account has been hacked today, and all his remaining funds removed...boy, when it rains, it pours!

Time for disability
Having cancer can be considered a disability when it interferes with employment. Contact a social worker in the hospital where he gets treatment and see where they suggest you apply for assistance. Unfortunately it may take some time to get disability payments to start even if he qualifies, but they may know what services can help make ends meet in the meantime.Social workers are also trained to help with mental stress and depression (totally understandable when you are facing cancer but also totally treatable if you can get the right mix of antidepressants and counseling). As for the bank account, the bank should fix that PDQ or they are going to be in a worse fix than he is.0 -
an outdated but useful list
Whatever support your son needs at this time, please check out the following, if they seem to apply:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Support/financial-resources
This site is put up by the National Institute of Health or some such, and is government-supported.
Cancer Care, a non-profit org., offers free support and counseling for cancer patients by oncology social workers. They have face-to-face counseling and counceling on the phone. Support groups on the phone are available too and are moderated by an oncology social worker. Call 800-813-HOPE. They can also give you info about financial resources. Check their website: www.cancercare.org
Gilda's Club - www.gildasclub.org - they offer free social and emotional support. Not sure if they may have financial information but check it out just in case.
Live Strong - www.livestrong.org - offers one-on-one support.
American Cancer Society (here) can also give you financial, support, etc. information available in different cities.
Best wishes to your son his family.
Take care,
Joe0
