Not really bc related but I made a decision to rejoin Weight Watchers

Now that I've finished chemo I felt I needed to do something about my weight gain. I decided to rejoin Weight Watchers. I've been a member on and off for many years and became Lifetime 14 years ago. I weighed 118 lbs in 1996 and stayed at that weight for 2 years. Menopause was not kind to me and I gained 80 lbs. Over the years I lost and regained until last winter I was down to 153 lbs. Chemo and steroids sent me over the edge again where I ate mindlessly. Sometimes I wish I had nausea so I would be less tempted to eat, especially when not hungry. I meet with onc in January and find out which pill he wants me to take and hopefully it won't deter any efforts on my weight loss journey. I felt by rejoining today it would keep me mindful of not overeating during the Christmas weekend.

I start 5 weeks of radiation in January and I'm hoping that 2011 is going to be a much healthier year for me.

    Oh, Char,
Good for you! I wish I could commit, but mostly I feel like I should be committed. I eat when I'm hungry, which, unfortunately seems to be most of the time. And I don't have the foresight or energy to prepare or even shop for healthy food.

I am proud of you - such a big step.

    right there with you...
Chemo is done, surgery will happen Jan 6. It's time for me to start training for those summer half marathon's and get on a healthy diet plan too. Luckily I have two small dogs that make excellent traning coaches!!

Good for you Char!!! I've done weight watchers before, and was thinking of doing it again, but... it will have to be after I'm done with treatments. Pretty tough to eat healthy, when you don't even have the energy to cook.
Great decision!! You go girl! Good luck,

    Boy can I relate!!
I still have 1 treatment and then 6.5 weeks of rads, but I've had the same problem...and a similar history. I'm anxiously waiting until I can get my body back in shape too. In Florida we have "Quick Weight Loss" programs which I lost 66 pounds before diagnosis...I joined as a lifetime member and now need to loss that same weight again.
I know that 2011 will be a healthier year for all of us!!

    We'd all be so much
We'd all be so much healthier if we ate thoughtfully all the time...wish I were better at it. I applaud your decision! and wish you much success on this journey.

    Merry Christmas!

`I am on weight watchers, too!! My cancer doctor agrees it is a good program. How do you like the new points plus plan? I am dragging my feet getting my foods entered. But WW works for me. Hope it does for you too!

    I go for
my first weigh in this Friday. I wasn't too good over Christmas and then had the stomach bug. I tracked food today and did the best I could. The new program sounds doable.

    Hi Char,
Hope you are recuperating from the stomach bug. I love the new program for the fact that you can eat all (or mostly all) of the fruits and veggies that you want. Hugs, jean

I've done WW before--it does work. Wish I could get my head back into it. Right now, I'm still soothing myself with food. I felt like the only person in the world who was on chemo and gained weight! I'm blaming it on the steroids! But, having said that, I've been done with chemo since May--so what's my excuse now?!

I did buy a Montel Williams high powered blender to make fruit/veggie smoothies. Today my breakfast was a smoothie which included 1 banana, 1/2 c. blueberries, 1/2 c. fresh pineapple, 1 c. lo-fat vanilla Greek yogurt and about 1/2 c. almond milk. It was pretty good, but I don't know how low-cal it was.

Good luck to you. Maybe when you post all your great results, you can motivate me!

    Hugs, Renee

I think it is breast cancer
I think it is breast cancer related! Obesity makes us higher risk for cancer. Also, our treatments make us higher risk for gaining weight. A real Catch 22! I have gained a few pounds this year and am going to try and enact my most effective ways to lose weight: eat less and move more ;-) Thanks for the inspiration!

I count points .. based on Weight Watchers program ... my
good friend Teresa and I joined about 4 weeks ago .. I am doing well, just gained 1 pound last week, which for me is a celebration hosting Christimas Dinner, and I did have 3 cocktails, see's candies and prime rib.

Weight Watchers works for me .. Pete and I are going out for 12/31 and 1/1/11 so I will spend my 49 extra weekly points on prime rib and fish .. maybe a glass of wine .. all in moderation.

At this time in my life, I do not have the will power to just say no .. to food, and yes, to exercise.

Good luck to all .. looking to shed a few pounds ..

    Strength and Courage,

Hubby and I are going out to eat tomorrow night as well. I usually order fish or chicken. My real dilemma is Saturday is our Christmas for his side of the family. Will power is not my best feature. I will try to avoid all those desserts!

A challenge I have is not only having no energy but I am medically disabled because of artificial shoulder and lumbar spinal stenosis. I used to walk 2 mi every day and now I look for the nearest chair to sit down. It sure doesn't help in the weight loss efforts especially as we age.

    Sweet Char
I think you should not worry about will power for your celebration. Enjoy what you want--get on the WW train on Monday. My advice is--when in doubt--eat dessert. As we all know here--life is short and precious. Yes, we have to take care of ourselves and stay as health-conscious as we can. But, enjoy your celebration. You can start being good on Monday.

    I'm just sayin'!!!

    Char,

I also fell off the WW wagon and I am also a WW Lifer. I cannot afford to gain another ounce so I will join WW again on Monday, January 3. Good luck to you. Are you able to do any stretching exercises while sitting. They would be good for your body.

    Let'a toast to a skinner 2011.

    Lots of Hugs,

wish I could stretch. That is one of the most frustrating things about losing mobility in your arms. I have no left humeral head and a prosthesis (reverse total shoulder) in my right arm. With a lot of physical therapy I am able to raise my right arm to do things but not keep it there (radiation is going to be a challenge) but I am unable to raise my left arm at all! So, neither the upper or lower body cooperates! lol I've learned to live with what I can do.

    WW
I returned to WW in the beginning of October and so far I have lost 17.8 lbs, I gained a few and lost a few over the Nov. Dec. holidays so I am stable at 17 lbs. now. It is really a great program and pretty easy to adhere to. My goal is to lose 50 lbs. so I ha e a ways to go. This week I started on my treadmill (it has been about six months) so that should help as well. Good luck to you I'm sure you are going to do great!.

    Weight Watchers...
Sounds like an awesome idea ~ it's easy to see that you already know how to go forth for success on the program.

I'll pull this post back up later for encouragement... as you provide your winning losses!
Continued success on your WW journey.

I am thinking about rejoining WW too
How do you like the new WW program: PPP? I am looking for a group meeting that both my husband and I can enjoy. We moved four years ago and we just didn't like the group in our new neigborhood as much as the one we attended several years ago when we lost over 150 pounds between us. He has diabetes and my cholesterol is rising from the Arimidex. Need to get this weight off!

    I've been
having water retention issues this week so didn't go to weigh in. I lost 2.8 lbs last week and have had a hard time staying focused. My pcp gave me a diuretic so hope to get back on track. I do like the new program because it finally takes carbs into account. I am definitely a carboholic! I would like to lose 70 lbs eventually but I'm setting 5 lb goals at a time.
