Carlene, I am praying for you. Be careful.

I guess this isn't all that common, as ER stuff goes. Nice young female doctor and she was very concerned about my pain level, which is surprisingly low. She thinks it will be okay....heavy anti-biotic stuff and a nice clear, waterproof bandage. Just watch for chills, fever, etc she said and keep it clean/covered. She stressed that I now have an open "wound" with a direct route to my bloodstream. I am so tempted to just have it out and not get another one unless I recur, but on the other hand, I'm not sure my veins can hold up to 4 more infusions. Chemo just really trashes your veins, from what I understand.

Oh dear, that is terrible!! I really hope the antibiotics do the trick for you..
I hope it will hold out long enough for your remaining infusions,
Take care

Oh, Carlene,
I'm so sorry that you're in the midst of this hurtle. I'll just bet that you were the star of the ER..... here's hoping for less excitement for you for a while!

Hi Carlene,
I think I missed something. Why can't they replace it? Can it still be used? Hopefully, you won't need it again for chemo after this, but I know I use mine for PET scans, etc... Is the presumption that it will heal???
Gosh, you should get a refund for this one! 'Hope you are better today! Ginny0 -

They can replace it, and probably will. This one can't be reused, however. I have 4 more maintenance infusions and it's either a new port or try and use my veins for those, which is often "iffy".0 -
Your port
Please take it easy and rest. Were you on a trip when this happened?, you mentioned you were in a motel. It is so dangerous to have an open wound like that, my daughter is an RN at Roswell Park Cancer Hospital in Buffalo and would have a fit if I turned and talked in her direction when she was flushing my pic line.
I know you will be careful and I am sending positive thoughts your way !0 -
Yep....girl trip - myself,Cafewoman53 said:Your port

Yep....girl trip - myself, my daughter and my BFF. we took off for south Texas for 3 days, with day trips to Mexico every day for shopping. I didn't drink the water, though. And I kept my port tightly covered.0 -

That's always been one of my fears, that my port would claw it's way to the surface, one day, like Sigourney Weaver's Alien!
Sending prayers your way Carlene! Keep an eye on that red streak!
Hugs!

After I read what happened to you, I tightened all of my bra straps to hike those puppies up and get some extra fat covering my port. I look like my boobs are practically growing out of my neck now!! HA! But the 3 points of my port have always looked like they would poke through at any moment, and my port rides about 3/8" off my chest. The surgeon told me that a good support bra was the most important thing I could do to keep pressure off of my port, and I'm certainly not busty! But your experience has put the fear in me now, and I can see when 'the girls' are hiked up that the skin over my port doesn't look quite so transparent. So, skinny ladies, hike 'em up high!!

A good thing for me to be flat as a board.nothing to pull my port out.
Bactrim...watch out for an upset tummy and frequent trips to the bathroom!
