Mom Update
Mom went for a second opinon September 27th at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. The doctors there were not as pessimistic as Mom's oncologist. They said the chemo is working and there is still lots that can be done.
The ascities (sp?) has not come back since the surgery. Although Mom is down to 87 lbs from 98 before surgery they told us it is not that unusual. There is no cancer in Mom's lungs the only problem is the location of the tumor. The doctors said it is possible through chemo for the tumour to continue to shrink and for a second surgery attempt to remove it is possible.
Mom had her first treatment yesterday since surgery. I was dreading it! Mom is also on an IV for the next month to avoid dehyrdation.
Well I am so happy yet surprised. Mom has always tolerated the chemo very well. She got up this morning and it was like she was herself from a year ago. She was laughing, she was eating and drinking. The doctors in Hamilton did an abdominal x-ray Thursday and we were told the doctor was very pleased with the results. Her energy level was very high today, she didn't nap but tired out around 8 pm. She still has a long way to go but today I have a little bit of belief that she will get there. Maybe she will be riding her bike next summer and exercising like a mad woman again.
Thanks for all of your support it means a lot to me because sometimes i feel like i am barely hanging on.

be ready to catch her
It's so good to hear that you mom has made good progress. Isn't it great to see her smiling and laughing a little bit?
Do be ready to catch her when she falls, today or tomorrow. The chemo has a 2 to 3 day grace period before it hits. She will likely be down for the count for several days, then feel pretty good for the 10 days before the next chemo.
Good luck!0 -
here's hoping
Here's hoping that your Mom continues to tolerate her chemo very well. Chemo has an accumlative effect for me. You didn't say which chemical cocktail she is on. After a few doses you may see that she has a harder time rebounding. It's quite common to have times when your treatments have to wait for your red and white blood cells to catch up. I love the picture of your Mom doing her mad woman exercizing...... I dream of doing that myself!

Hi Maria,
This is Mom's 4th treatment, each time she seems a little stronger than the last one. We do know that day 4-7 are the ones where she will become more tired. So far, all of Mom's blood work has been good so we don't know what her counts are but they never have not had to delay a treatment.
I believe she takes carbol/taxil. I dream of my mom riding her bike every morning for 2-3 hours all summer like she has in the past. Of all of her activities this is the one she misses the most.
Keep up the fight. I keep all of the women her in my thoughts and in my prayers. Sending virtual hugs and positive vibes your way.

Her activities are one reason I believe she is doing so well. That sure helped me being very active before I ever had a clue I had ovarian cancer.
Hopefully her blood counts will stay in the range they need to be to keep her on track!
