Have my first appointment with my Oncologist after my lumpectomy on my left breast. Pathology came back..good news...no nodes..Stage 1...doctor thinks radiation treatments will be necessary but she couldn't tell me more.
What should I expect with the Oncologist? Will he be able to tell me if radiation is all that is needed?

I have a wonderful medical oncologist/blood disorders (he's also my sister's). When I met with him following bilateral mastectomy he told me I needed chemo. I did not have any lymph node involvement so he said I'll see an Oncologist/Radiologist to determine whether I need rads. I'm hoping not. Wishing you the best. He/she will give you his/her medical opinion and options and you'll make the decisions. For me it was whatever it takes.

Yea for no nodes!
That is good news! I was able to find out from my Onc. what the treatment plan was. He was pretty sure before what we would do. I was a stage 1 grade 1 no nodes. My Onc. wanted me to do chemo and rads because of my age.(49) He kept saying I was so young. I did not think I was but I did not argue with him lol! I agreed to go ahead and be agressive with treatment and am done with it all but the Tamoxifen. God Bless

Ask
Ask your onc about the oncotype test. It gives more info as to if having chemo would be of benefit if your cancer is hormone receptive. Your oncologist will give you his plan for your treatment - you make the final decision once you have all the info you need. Good luck to you.

I too had a lumpectomy with
I too had a lumpectomy with no node involvement. I was only going to have rads and Arimidex. But Onc ordered the Oncotype test and we all decided that, given the results (22) and my "young" age (her words), 62, I should give it everything I could. So had chemo, am having rads and am taking Arimidex.
I agree with what the other ladies said to give it everything you can. Do ask for an Oncotype test.

Hi
I agree with Sally. I was also stage 1, no lymph node involvement. I had a lumpectomy and my oncologist ordered the oncotype dx test. The results came back with a high percentage that it can come back, so she treated it agressively with 6 rounds of chemo (carboplaten and taxotere) then 36 radiation treatments. BTW, my sweet little oncologist lady doctor just put up a website. www.IsabellaMartire-MD.com. If anyone wants to look at the website, the room with the aqua clock is "my" chemo room. Every third Friday from November 2008 to March 2009. Everyone in the office is special. I am so glad I was referred to her.
The first thing Dr. Martire said to me when we met was that we were going to become very close friends. She was right. I love her now like a sister.
