What is the highest count that the AFP can be? My Dad's AFP was 1770 in July and is now 5565.. I have looked online trying to understand the tumor marker test, but I really haven't found the answers I am looking for. My Dad has HCC and (end stage)Cirrohisis of the Liver. He has been in the hospital 3 times since November with varcie bleeds. The most recent was in August and had to have 5 bands put on his esophagus. He has been banded at least 8 times that I have counted. I know one of these times they will be able to stop the bleeding, but Damn, he's been lucky so far. He won't stop drinking and is so oblivious to how serious his illness is. Drives my insane!!!! I would love to find out more about the AFP test if anyone has any info. I would so appreciate it. Sorry I am rambling, but I am just so frustrated. Thanks.

    My AFP was at 6000 when they
    My AFP was at 6000 when they found my 9cm tumor. That was in Sept 2009. My surgery was in Feb 2010, the day before, the test showed my AFP was 10,000. AFP can be in the millions, especialy with pregnant women. I am at 1.8 right now. Normal range is below 8. Hope this helps..

    Thank you very much. I won't panic too much then. He cannot have surgery, due to the cronic drinking and they say due to the cirrohsis, heart, lung and HCC there is no help. The only thing they can do for him is to make him comfortable until it's all over. I am just really tired. He is becoming so mean and hard to want to be around. I keep telling myself that "This is not my Dad." I love him so much and hate to see him continue to hurt himself and watch him go through this. Thanks for the information. I hope and pray you continue to do well.
