Tear in the windpipe or airway

Hi everyone,
Has anyone had this problem?
My brother had his surgery (IL) In April 2010. They had to go in and stretch his esophagus 6 times since then. The problem is after the last one he got real sick and went back in the hospital and they found his food was going in his lungs. After two weeks in the hospital he is home with a stent in. The tear is in his windpipe and they said that the radiation had weaken the area so that it torn. They are waiting to see if the tear heals itself.
I haven’t had these problems with my surgery which was in Feb 2010 (MIE).
He is diabetic and I know that slows down his healing. I was just wondering if anyone else had tears in the windpipe.
