GOOD THAT ACTUALLY HAD A TASTE

I have been trying to find something to eat that was even remotely close to what it tasted like prior to chemo and radiation. I tried Quaker Instant Cheddar Cheese Grits with salt and pepper and butter today. For the first time, I could not tell a difference in the taste between the Grits now and prior to rads and chemo. So, for the first time I know that I can eat Grits and be happy. They did not hurt going down my throat either. This, however small it seems, made my day.

    On yer way..
Good one Finz....it will continue to get better. I find all natural foods, veges and fruit are all good now and taste as good if not better than before. Pasta and breads and other starchy foods go lame within a few seconds but I am off most of that stuff now anyway so no biggy. Glad your recovery is showing some good signs.

    Grits

While going through treatment all I could get down was some watered down grits, a lot of your taste will all start coming back it is a slow process but will get better

    Taste
Everyday is a surprise when it comes to eating. I would get so upset & worried that I would never be able to eat again. I was pushing it & my body was not ready! So I decided to take it easy & try something new each week instead of every day. Now after five month's post treatment I am tasting everything. Anything that is fresh tastes wonderfull. Boxed or
frozen dinner's are a waste as I ended up throwing them out. Too much sodium etc. No huge portion's so I make every meal count. Plus eat more frequently & make sure it is healthy!

    Me too.
I started off with Cream of Wheat and Grits...then on to yogurt, applesauce and fruit cups.
Breads are still out for me, very little saliva. I'm 13 weeks post treatment and the good things are:
    Bananas
    Tomatoes, salads
    Pasta w/alfredo type sauce
    Chicken breast...pounded tender, marinated
    Yogurts

...to name a few. Sweets still don't do much for me, and I had a big sweet tooth prior to treatments.

    Glad you are doing well,
    Chuck.

    Sweets
Apple Sauce was another good one for me....

I'm fourteen months post treatment and sweets have pretty much been a problem the total time. I especially used to eat a lot of Ice Cream....it has been totally not there flavor wise.

But I did have a Sprite this week-end because I couldn't get any water where I was, it tasted pretty good actually.

I also, tried a small toasted coconut and almond ice cream this past week-end, it also tasted preety good. Not quite how it used to tasdt, but much better than several months ago.

    Ice cream
I used to love ice cream...actually used to tell my wife to back off on buying it.
Moose Tracks and Breyer's Mint Chip were my favs...now, not much flavor from either one.

    Best to all,
    Chuck.

    When did you guys start
When did you guys start drinking soda and juice? I know these have a lot of acid and juice still bothers my throat. I take a sip of juice, tastes good but burns going down. Take a sip of water, burning goes away. I've noticed this a lot with the different foods I'm eating. I love Italian soda, especially the orange and lemon but I also know these are packed with natural acids that are just waiting to burn my throat lol.

I think the burning is cause from the Rads still? Or, could it be from coughing up the junk in my throat or a combination of the two?

    iCE CREAM
I still make root beer floats and get about 1100 calories from just one. good way for me to get calories. Taste is coming back pretty well. I am 18 weeks out.

    Outstanding
Being that you and I are pretty much on the same time line, I'm glad to read that you can sip down a soda. I still find all of them...with any amount of carbonation....burns the interior of my mouth like crazy. The only way I can attempt to drink a coke is the pour it in a large 24oz. cup and make it with a huge foam head on it. This way the carbonation is tempered, and makes it just a little flat, but not too much so. I feel like at times that I'm a Lab Scientist in seeking out things that are edible. Just keep on keeping on.

I remember during radiation treatment, coke tasted like fizzy water. Crazy...no sugar nothing, just fizz.

    Similar
That is similar to how Ice Cream was with me orginally, cold, had texture & substance, just no taste or flavor.

Not sure on juice, I love fresh Orange Juice, or not from concentrate. But it tasted kind of funky because I couldn't taste any sweet. It's starting to taste much better also.

I can't really remember as for the acid part. It's been such a long trial and error period. I just try something, if it bothers me, I try again in a few months.

    L- Glutamine
    John,

You should get some L Glutamine Powder. You mix with water (or shake) and drink it. It won't burn and you can drink it to relieve the burns, swish and swallow. L-G Powder does a lot of good things for your recovery all over.

Don't be too worried if you can't drink Sodas. They are totally crap for your health. Use this opportunity to wean off rubbish foods you ate before. Go Healthy me matey AAAARRRHH !

    Grits
I have read about a lot of grit eating on these boards. I live in the north east and can honestly say I have never eaten grits. But they certainly seem to be a good choice as a starting point for eating and tasteing.
Don't know where I would get grits, or how I would prepare them. It is definitely new to me to learn that you put cheese in them. I always thought they were like oatmeal.

    Soda!
I am not liking the soda at all post treatment. However, pure fruit juice is wonderfull. Even orange. I just bought myself a juicer with a good motor & going to give it a try. I think Grit's are like cream of wheat. My mother makes them but we have a friend that bring's them to her as we cannot find them here in Northern Canada. She also cooks them the same way but does not add cheese.

    LOL
If you are from the North, you would eat grits with milk and sugar (or similar) as they taste a lot like cream of wheat that way.

In the South they are mainly eaten with a dab of butter and a little salt and pepper. You can also mix a fair amount of cheddar cheese in with them and they are really good, especially served with fresh fried fish, and some collard greens.

How do I know these things you ask... I'm a damn yankee. I grew up in Ohio, and ate my grits the Northern way when young. Now that I'm grown and living in Florida, I eat them the Southern way...

Damn Yankee, means I'm from the North, but stayed in the South...LOL.
