Today I was empowered

I went for my regular dental cleaning this morning. The hygienist was having some issues with her boss, which she decided to complain to me about. Half way through her third sentence, I interrupted and said "You know, I really don't need to hear this". I might be leaned back in a chair, with someone in a mask hovering over me, but that doesn't mean I'm her prisoner! She immediately apologized, and the rest of the treatment went very pleasantly.
In times past I might have just listened, even though it made me uncomfortable, but today I felt empowered to speak up. Hurray for me!

    Sometimes you just have to
Sometimes you just have to speak up. Others just get so involved in their own lives and don't stop to think that maybe there might be something going on in yours and you just don't need or want to hear the minute details of what is going on in theirs. Especially if they are pissin and moanin about some petty stuff.

    Hurray for you.

I hate to go to a
I hate to go to a professional place of business and hear an employee vent about another associate. There have been times I would just leave.

Hooray indeed, as you stated many people would simply sit there and endure the rant rather htan speak up.

    I love it!
One of the worst things to hear right now from other people is their whining about petty, insignificant problems. Way to go, girl!

    Thank you all!
I've decided not to be a dump site for other peoples' toxic waste, and that was the first step. I'm sure it will be harder as I get closer to home, but one day at a time. This was good practice for me. Thanks for all your encouragement. Hugs, Gracie

    you probably taught her a
you probably taught her a valuable lesson and she will not "dump" on others either. You did many people a favor. Since she seems to have listened to you, she probably is well meaning and will change her practice.

    I 'm sorry
Though we all might think that crap is petty I hate to say it but if more people had an ear for others maybe the stresses of life wouldn't be so great. I am sorry you feel the way you do since if there is one thing I have thought long and hard about is being there for others even if it is only to listen. I can't imagine a life where I couldn't talk openly about how I feel without it being petty...
I was single mother and had friends that mostly cared about their lives but now I see those same friends and LIFE has away of humbling us all.
Just my thought. We all have a story if willing to hear it.

Yes, friends should be there for one another, and thank you for your point of view. However I am not the hygienist's friend, per se, I'm her patient. When I go into a professional setting, to pay for a professional procedure, I expect the professional performing this service to put aside whatever personal problems she might have, and treat me in a professional manner. In other words, her behavior was unprofessional. I pay handsomely for my dental care. I'm not the hygienist's counselor, and I don't feel compelled to listen to her vent her problems to me. Furthermore, her boss is also my dentist. I don't want to know anything about internal problems whenever I see either of them. G.
