Recommendations for Good books for the recently diagnosed?

My friend found out about two weeks ago about his cancer in lungs and kidney. He is completely indifferent and barely even cares to ask his doctors any questions. He has a history of depression and suicide.
I thought if I got him some books to help him understand what is happening and put him in a mindset of surviving, He could read them as he stays in the hospital.
Are there any good books out there?
Your advice is appreciated.

    I would highly recommend contacting the American Cancer Society-They have very good booklets-information etc-They will send this information or if you have a local Cancer center, you can pick up information. Take care Cindy

    The trouble with books
    The trouble with books - it's difficult for a truly depressed person to concentrate on a book, maybe a book-on-cd or book-on-tape or on a Playaway would be better. Though maybe not so for a nonfiction work that may need referring back to...

    The Cleveland Clinic Guide to Lung Cancer by Peter Mazzone comes to mind, it's brand new and surely up to date

    Johns Hopkins Patients' Guide to Lung Cancer by Justin Klamerus, also brand new

    ABC of Lung Cancer (2008) edited by Ian Hunt.
