Folfori + Avastin Rash??
**** had his 2nd round (actually his 14th but 2nd for this time) of Folfori + Avastin last Wednesday - Friday. After unhooking he went for a swim with our dogs in the ocean. Later he noticed a red rash on both inner thighs. We think it is a jelly fish (Portuguese Man o War) sting but just want to check that it is not from the chemo. He went by the chemo office at the hospital today because he had a MRI and the nurse didn't think it was chemo related. He sees the onc tomorrow. I just like to check with all of you because you are a wealth of information.
I hope everyone is enjoying good weather. For those of you in the sweltering heat I hope you have some cool water to swim in and enjoy.
Aloha,
Kathleen

no rash here
I had 2 rounds of avastin one each of folfori and folfox. I did the avastin for 12 months with the second round.
I never had a rash from the chemo, I did get a rash from hanging on a rubber raft. I think the salt water caused the rash from jumping on and off the raft all day. It lasted for days, and made little scabs before going away.
I just thought it may be from his skin being so tender a jelly fish, or sand and salt could be the villan.
I'm glad he felt well enough to swim and play with the dogs, I was so wasted I went to bed and rested after treatments.
God Bless

I am on ****'s schedule. I just completed my 3rd round last week. No rash but a lot of yuckyness. I am envious that he gets out there and swims. Today is the first day I feel like going for a walk.
What does he take for nauseasness?0 -
rash on face
Hi Kathleen,
I had a rash on my face once from oxaliplatin (beard-pattern! very weird) -- and sometimes flushed face/chest from steroids. But never anywhere else on my body. Oh wait -- I once had a rash on my legs but that was from levamisole (used in a similar way to leucovorin). I would guess ****'s rash is more likely from the sea (jelly fish or other) -- but you are smart to think about other options. Is it itchy? If not spreading, then that's a good sign....
Good luck

update
Hi,
**** saw both the onc and the dermatologist yesterday. The rash has spread some. It is on both inner thighs in about a 4 sq. in. area and a bit on his chin and a few dots on his torso. The rash is itchy, not painful. Both docs seem to think it is chemo related. He unhooked on Friday from the pump. He is supposed to have chemo again next Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what they do with this.
****'s mom had shingles prior to visiting us in June. Her doc cleared her to come and said she was all clear. However, both docs looked hard at the rash and wondered.
So, we are in wait and see mode. We will be alert if they let him do chemo on Tuesday.
Thanks for the support.
Also, for nausea he takes Emend. He has been on it since the beginning. He did not know if it was helping until he skipped it one time. Now, he never skips it.
He is quite tired with the Folfori + Avastin but for him, he has to keep exercising and going. He always feels much better after he works his body.

Hi Kathleen,
Hmmm. Well, I'm sorry they couldn't rule out chemo-related - I was hoping for jellyfish! For what it's worth, even after I had my weird rash (which was pretty clearly an allergic reaction to the chemo -- probably the oxaliplatin), I did continue on with the chemo (Folfiri plus Avastin). My onc gave me a bit more premed protection (antihistamine and steroid). A little spooky but he kept a close eye on me and I was fine -- did quite a few more rounds.
Good luck to you both....
Tara
ps I'm an Emend fan!0
